Unlike massive liners, the Aegean Odyssey is just right for getting to know people and enjoying a peaceful voyage. We were among the few Americans and relished getting to know so many Australians, English, and Canadians, who are much quieter and more dignified than party seekers from the U.S. I loved the ambience of the buffet. Our one night in the Marco Polo was spoiled by an invitation to dine with the arrogant captain, who ignored all of us. Food was balanced--lots of fresh, raw fruit and vegetables, terrific cheese, pizza, and tea. My only complaints were the British style broths—watery and greasy—and the absence of a seafood chowder of any kind. Desserts were spectacular. I browsed the library, sunned by the pool, and enjoyed excursions in Spain and Sicily. The time wasted in Morocco did little more than introduce me to the inside of a bus. I'm not sure why we skipped Gibraltar. Housekeeping was punctilious. Beauty salon was only so-so. Laundry service was prompt. We loved it all and want to return.
Hospitality on embarking included chilled champagne, sandwiches, and marzipan. Comfy sofa and bed. Bathroom contained a tub rather than the obligatory phone-booth-sized shower. Vanity space was limited. I needed a blanket on one chilly day. The steward brought a stained blanket smelling of diesel fuel (!) End of cruise gifts included a carry bag.
