Carnival Cruise Line announced in summer 2018 that Carnival Triumph, a 20-year-old ship, would go under the knife in early 2019 for a $200-million dry dock that would substantially transform the vessel. The transformation will be so complete that Carnival decided this revitalized ship needed a new name: Carnival Sunrise.
Similar to what the line did when it converted Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Sunrise will debut at the end of April 2019 with a host of new features, dining options and amenities. Its brand-new look can be attributed to a sweeping refurbishment that will touch nearly every public room, stateroom and corridor onboard, adding features and decor options found aboard Carnival's newest ships, including Carnival Horizon.
The two-month transformation from Carnival Triumph will begin with a dry dock on March 1, 2019 in Cadiz, Spain. Carnival Sunrise will debut on April 29, 2019 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Carnival has made every effort to add all of its newest eateries onboard the refitted Carnival Sunrise, including Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse that debuted aboard Carnival Horizon. The ship's main dining rooms will also receive a complete refurb.
As part of the refit, the Lido Marketplace will receive the new a la carte Seafood Shack that offers lobster rolls and New England-style fare, along with favorites like the Carnival Deli; Pizzeria del Capitano; and an expanded version of Swirls, serving up complimentary ice cream and frozen yogurt.
Carnival Sunrise also gains three new specialty dining experiences: Cucina del Capitano, featuring family-style dishes inspired by new and classic Italian cuisine; the popular Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse (try the wasabi-infused mashed potatoes to complement this classic American steakhouse experience); and the Chef's Table, which brings Carnival's most exclusive dining experience to a new glass-enclosed venue situated in the forward dining room.
Also added to Carnival Sunrise are an expanded version of the JavaBlue Cafe coffee bar; a larger Cherry on Top with bulk candies and fanciful gifts; and Bonsai Express, a casual Japanese-themed eatery featuring a wide array of sushi, sashimi, rolls and other traditional dishes.
Existing eateries like Guy's Burger Joint and the BlueIguana Cantina that were added to Carnival Triumph during the ships last refurbishment will remain onboard.
All cabins and suites (1,492 in all) will be completely refitted during the dry dock, and upgraded with new hard and soft furnishings that better reflect the bright, airy Caribbean-style decor that Carnival introduced aboard Carnival Breeze.
Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Suite categories will be available post-refit, along with new Cloud 9 Spa accommodations that provide complimentary access to the ship's thermal suite along with two free fitness classes per passenger, upgraded toiletries, bathrobes and slippers.
Two new Captain's Suites will be situated high atop the ship's navigation bridge for the most commanding views from floor-to-ceiling windows. Carnival Sunrise will also feature two new Junior Suites, new extended-balcony Grand Suites, and six new Scenic Ocean View cabins.
There will be 46 accesible rooms onboard.
Top Deck Attractions
Up on top, cruisers will find several new additions when Carnival Sunrise emerges from dry dock.
The ship will have Carnival's new SportSquare ropes course, offering heart-racing views of the sea -- about 150 feet below. The activity complex also includes a basketball course, jogging track, Ping-Pong, foosball and pool tables, and a nine-hole miniature golf course.
The new Carnival WaterWorks will sport a 203-foot-long AquaTunnel slide and Carnival's popular 212-foot-long Twister Slide. A 75-gallon "PowerDrencher" tipping bucket keeps things cool in the kiddie splash park.
Carnival Sunrise also gains the soothing Serenity Adult Only Retreat. This exclusive deck, which was not previously on Carnival Triumph, adds the adults-only oasis with plush chaise lounges, dedicated whirlpools and resort-style umbrellas from an isolated perch high atop the ship.
There is no skimping on entertainment aboard this ship. Carnival Sunrise will take a page from Carnival's newest ships in adding several new entertainment venues. Included are the new multi-purpose Liquid Lounge main show lounge; the Limelight Lounge that will host Carnival's Punchliner Comedy Club performances; the popular new Piano Bar 88 concept; and the RedFrog Pub, featuring Carnival's own Thirstyfrog Red brew and plenty of adult-themed diversions, like Adult Pub Trivia.
Like the rest of Carnival's fleet, activities are nearly nonstop throughout the day and night and include live musical performances, trivia sessions, pool games, and full-blown Broadway-style production shows.
Cruisers with families will love the new spacious facilities for kids and teens aboard Carnival Sunrise. Kids aged 2 through 11 will find a brand-new Camp Ocean kids club facility designed just for them; a marine-inspired play area that is designed to bring the ocean -- and plenty of fun -- to the cruise. Older kids can enjoy a new Circle "C" facility designed for 12- to 14-year olds, while Club O2 is geared to teens from 15 to 17 years of age.
In addition, Carnival Sunrise will also receive The Warehouse, a space featuring the latest video and arcade games at sea.
Carnival Sunrise will initially sail short cruises to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Norfolk, Virginia before repositioning to New York for a series of summer cruises to Canada and New England, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. In winter 2019, Sunrise repositions to Fort Lauderdale for voyages to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Cuba.
