The positives: beautiful boat. Cirque show was good. Bar staff served two drinks at one time with the drink package (that everyone has - free with sea offers are plentiful) The negatives: From the port experience to disembarkation all we did was wait in lines. Every dinner (Savor, Taste, Manhattan Room, and Specialty - Carney’s and Tepanyaki) took no less than theee hours. Breakfast in the dining room was 2 hours and 20 minutes. Getting a drink at any bar, 20 minutes. Seeing a show? Stand in line for no less than 30 minutes. Want to watch something fun in the atrium - good luck. Better get your chair 40 minutes early. We usually cruise with carnival (which NCL staff bad mouthed in their show) and are used to friendly staff, bartenders that remember you and what you drink, waitstaff in the dining room that build a relationship with you. None of that is at NCL. They are severely understaffed and the staff does not care about the guest. Bartenders will not even make eye contact. You have to wave your hands to get noticed. Casino is horribly Smokey. If you play foe even half an hour, you return to your room smelling like an ashtray. The smell of smoke permiates to the 8th floor - which is quite beautiful but smelly. We loved the concept of the open promenade on the 8th deck and enjoyed being able to sit outside, but you get no service. We will never sail with NCL again. NCL does not make anyone feel like they want your business. Even the people checking in and out at the ports are grumpy. Finally - Harvest Caye is a rip off. We bought a beer for $6.95 PLUS a service charge AND taxes and it equated to $10. Later on at the swim I bar, the bartender arbitrarily changed the price of the same beer to $9 plus service fee and taxes. And then a tip on top of it. No one was friendly at this stop either. If they too are NCL employees they are all embracing the crappy culture that is on the boat. We have a disabled daughter and on Royal Caribbean, received exceptional service at the port. NCL promised that they would have someone meet us at the port, but the person did not show up. We called four times and she kept saying she was on her way but did not come. We ended up just doing the lines. We are also promised a private lifeboat demonstration for her which they did not do. NCL does not keep their promises. The parking situation is beyond awful. We will never give our money or time to NCL again. Read Less

We have cruised with NCL and loved it. This experience was not the all inclusive trip we'd hoped for. It was nothing but buffet breakfast/lunch/dinner ... Repeat. And no entertainment. Why? Because we didn't get an earlier boarding time option and missed all the "reservations" ... How can you promote FREE STYLE and require reservations for EVERYTHING and allow others ALL to be booked up prior to getting sail. Public rooms, such as he game room, we got kicked out of for a private event. Not allowed to eat in the large dining room bc of a private event. It was like Everytime we found something or an alternative to do... they shut it down. The ropes course was always closed. Same with majority of the slides. Kids Splash Academy was always overbooked. Shows that actually didn't post about needing reservations, would suddenly need them and we got put on stand by (family escape the big top). We were already a bit disenchanted from being price gouged on our last minute room that became available via a cancellation. $3900 for an interior in a horrible location. NOTHING was family friendly and it was a nightmare for us with 2 young kids. EVERYTHING is an upcharge/ a la carte and comes with tis own "additional" 20% gratuities, on top of the daily service charges of $14.50/ day per person, including young kids. Lines at the bar were always so long, when they were open and bar tenders and wait staff were not personable. The few times we dined in the actual dinning rooms it took 1 1/2 - 2 hrs and that as with skipping the dessert course bc the kids were over it. Food was not worth the angst. The ports were amazing... We MUCH enjoyed our time away from NCL. The people of Belize City and Costa Maya were wonderful and grateful for our patronage, sometime NCL seemed to take for granted. Although again the "reservation" monster appeared at our tendered port, leaving is on board for hours past arrival. Read Less

The reservation process was very difficult. We had 7 people in our group and had to book 2 separate reservations. We were told that the reservations could not be linked together which made it very difficult to plan and register for events. They said they needed a parent over 21 in each room. When the reservation was booked, we were told it would be possible to link both rooms but that didn’t happen. The boarding process was a nightmare. I know it was difficult due to Mardi Gras but it was hotter inside the port checkin than outside. The lines were very long. Once we boarded, we were starving because it took over 2 hours to board. We found out that the restaurants were closed until 5. Also, we had no idea that we needed to make reservations for some of the entertainment events which were sold out quick. We couldn’t book anything together because we had different reservations. I had to physically go to 2 rooms and book the reservations separate. Our package came with the unlimited drink package and beverage package for the children. They had many bars on the ship but not enough staff to serve the clients. It would take over 30 minutes at times, most of the time to get drinks. I felt cheated, the idea of unlimited drinks but I couldn’t order in a timely manner. We couldn’t bring water on the ship. The charge for water is absurd. There was only 2 places a child could get a soda. They could go to a bar or a restaurant. So if it took a long time to order mixed drinks, how long would it take for a child to order theirs. Even when ordering at the specialty restaurants the drink orders always took a while. The overall service on this cruise was horrendous. Especially, the restaurant and bar services. The pool area was too small and crowded. I thought the destination days were too short. We didn’t have enough time to explore. I know Harvest Caye is NCL’s island but they need to run more ferry’s to Plecentia. Harvest Caye was the worst stop on the cruise. I spoke to many people that have cruised before and they said this cruise was the worst service they have ever received on a cruise ship. I felt nickeled and dined for everything. As far as this trip, I am very disappointed in my first cruise experience with Norwegian. I don’t think I will be back. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I had a lot of family members going on this cruise. We are from the New Orleans area and traveled with my BIL, SIL, nephew, Husband, Daughter and many cousins. To start, getting to the ship was a nightmare. Everyone had received text messages to get to the port early due to possible traffic problems due to Mardi Gras parades. This meant everyone was trying to get on the ship at the same time instead of the designated boarding times. There was a flood of people waiting for employees to arrive to start the check-in process. Once things started however, embarkation went pretty smooth. We had lunch at the buffet and our balcony room was ready pretty quickly. Our cabin was the perfect size for three adults as my daughter slept on the sofa bed. We did have an odor in the bathroom from the time we walked in our cabin. We mentioned it to our steward but nothing was done about it. I found the food on the ship to be pretty good. We ate breakfast at the buffet every morning and were never disappointed. We ate at all of the dining rooms, at Cagney's twice and Teppanaki once. I was not all that crazy for the food at the Garden cafe buffet for lunch and we preferred eating at O'Sheehans. Food service was just ok, with dinners taking at a minimum 1 1/2 hours. I didn't find the wait staff in any areas to be very friendly as I have experienced friendly staff on other cruise lines. I found the entertainment on the ship to be excellent. I especially enjoyed the band at Syd Norman's Pour house and was in there several evenings. We also enjoyed the comedy shows and the Dueling Pianos. I was mesmerized at the Burn the Floor show while I fell asleep during Rock of Ages. (Maybe I was just tired from a busy day) Wasn't particularly thrilled with this one. We did do the Escape room but I don't think anyone escaped on the entire ship. Even though we have done several escape rooms this one was particularly hard. Several family members enjoyed the ropes course and walking the plank. We also played mini-golf and ping pong several times. In Cozumel we went to Mr. Sanchos and would do this again. We had been to Cozumel several times and tried Mr. Sanchos for this trip. The food and service was excellent and the water was great. The coconut shrimp was a favorite. In Belize, we passed through the Harvest Caye area and took the Placencia ferry to the main Island of Belize. We then took a tour with Splash Dive Belize to the Silk Caye reef. It was a beautiful reef and we enjoyed the snorkeling and especially swimming with nurse sharks. In Costa Maya, we took a taxi to the Mahuhual area and went to Tropicante where we had loungers on the beach, enjoyed some food and drinks and walked along the Malecon and did some shopping. This was only a short distance from the cruise ship pier. I didn't like that we had such a short time here and don't quite understand why we couldn't stay longer. Having to be back on the ship for 1:30 was ridiculous. We would have liked to spend more time at Tropicante. While I enjoyed the cruise overall I cannot say that I was crazy about the layout of the ship. The pool area was way too small for so many people on the ship so we spent most of our time in Spice H20. I also didn't like that there were no food or drink stations near the pool. I had to go all the way to the buffet to refill my water cup. I also didn't like having to walk through the smoky casino to get places. I wish ships would put the casino on one end of the ship so you don't have the smoke issue. While I have been on other Norwegian ships and enjoyed them, I wouldn't probably do another cruise on the Breakaway. Attached are the dailies from this cruise. Read Less

I booked with a large group of friends and had a good time, but was not overly impressed with the layout of the ship. Service was sorely lacking in the dining. We Went eat in 3 of the restaurants on board the ship and we were never asked by any of the waiter/waitress for anything to drink other than the provided glasses of water. I Paid $9.95 a day to stay in contact with my son through the NCL APP and was rarely able to reach him. The arcade package was a HUGE waist of money. All the good games that teenagers want to play still cost money and are not included in the premium $175.00 package. Picture packages were overpriced for the quality of printed photos. The pool is entirely to small to enjoy because it was overrun with drunks. The bartenders around the pool area were amazingly good and fast. The ports and excursions were amazing and we all thoroughly enjoyed seeing what these ports had to offer. Our cabin steward, Mark, was beyond awesome and friendly! Everything we needed was taken care of quickly and he always had a smile and kind words ever time we came in contact with him. Read Less

One enjoyable aspect of living in south Louisiana is Mardi Gras week. I anticipate this week not for the parades, but because the kids are predictably off from school for the entire week, allowing me to plan family vacations. Many families use the opportunity to go skiing in the Rockies or to visit theme parks in Orlando. An overlooked and superior option in my opinion is taking a cruise from New Orleans. My 4 and 5 year old boys had a fantastic time and made some great memories this year on the Norwegian Breakaway. My wife and I loved the cruise as well but for completely different reasons - convenience, relaxation, great shows, good food, and especially the included ultimate drink package. Except for embarkation our experience on the NCL Breakaway was superior to our recent 7 day cruise on the Carnival Dream. The Port of New Orleans was predictably chaotic due to an active Mardi Gras parade on St. Charles, preparations for the Bacchus parade/ball at the convention center, and embarkation of two large cruise ships (NCL Breakaway and Carnival Dream). Getting to the port and navigating to our parking lot was an exercise in patience and we will try to find an alternate method next time. Carnival has exclusive use of the Erato parking garage and port building. NCL passengers instead park in front of the Riverwalk Mall next to the huge whale murals and then walk through the Riverwalk Mall itself to find the Julia St. cruise terminal. Parking is $20/night and luggage drop off is adjacent to the parking lot. Security and check-in was slow and crowded as passengers were all instructed to arrive early due to the Mardi Gras parades. Embarkation was a pain but at least we didn't have to navigate an airport and fly with our two kids. The ship itself is quite new (2013), attractive, and impeccably clean. We booked a standard family room with picture window (just over 200 sqft) and found we had adequate space. Our boys loved the fold-away bunk bed from the ceiling, and the bathroom with tub was bigger than expected. The art, decor and color schemes throughout the ship were classy and not at all tacky or obnoxious. Dining was great with one caveat. Make all evening dining reservations as soon as you can! This will save you from waiting and will ensure you get to experience the specialty restaurants that interest you. You can always cancel later. The main dining room fare (Taste, Savor, Manhattan) was at or slightly above average for cruise ship dining. Le Bistro and Ocean Blue were really good. Teppanyaki was meh. Didn't get a chance to try Cagney's since we missed our reservation after getting far too drunk. Didn't try the italian or brazilian place. We didn't eat at the buffet, but our boys ate their weight in mac&cheese, pizza and soft serve ice cream. Cruise ship buffets always feel crowded but finding seating was never difficult. Entertainment was quite good. All of the live performance shows were well rehearsed with great dancing and vocals. We didn't spend much time up on the pool deck so can't really comment. Some of the bars looked under-staffed but it's easy enough to walk 100 ft to the next bar. Our favorite bar was Shakers on the 8th floor which served up some excellent (and powerful) martinis. Splash Academy (kid's camp) does an incredible job. The counselors are all friendly and enthusiastic. Our 4 and 5 year old boys spent 8-10 hours/day in camp and clearly had a blast. Each night they fell asleep the moment their head touched pillow. Our favorite cruise stop was Harvest Caye, the island owned by NCL. Drinks were pricey and not covered by on-ship drink packages. But we loved the island with its gigantic pool, swim-up bars, and decent beach with abundance of chairs and shade. Our family cruised on the Carnival Dream last year so we are in a good position to make comparisons. We certainly enjoyed our trip on the Dream but prefer the Breakaway for many reasons. On Breakaway the kids camp was slightly better with more councilors, more variation in activities and more extended hours. The ship itself felt more luxurious and less crowded. Far less waiting for elevators. The variety of activities on board and the variety of dining options helps ensure that the 4000 passengers are well-dispersed. The food and food variety is better on the Breakaway. Alcoholic beverage variety is better as well with some themed bars having special drinks (whiskey, martinis, etc). And NCL beverage package is unlimited, so you will not be cut off after so many drinks like on Carnival. However, an NCL cruise is probably 25% more expensive in the end (once adding the Carnival drink package) so everyone should decide for themselves if the extra expense is worth it. Our family is booked for a repeat cruise in 2020! Read Less

I choose this cruise to try a different cruise line. The service was hit or miss, more miss than anything else. From poor service in the dinning room where we were forgotten on 4 different times in different dinning areas. Than things were forgot in our room. I didn't look to see we had no towels when I got in the shower, only to find a hand towel and a wash cloth to dry off with. The whole ship felt so closed in. The furniture looked old and beat up, and very uncomfortable You have to put in reservations for everything just about. We did finely get in to one of the shows. Rock of Ages was wonderful! The staff did a wonderful job. I do have to say the the best part of the whole cruise was the excursions. I just don't think I will ever do a cruise with Norwegian Cruise line again. Read Less

I've been on over 50 cruises and I have to say that I think this has been my favorite ship so far. The ship is big enough so you don't feel crowded. We could always find a place to sit even when the event was crowded. The shows were outstanding, my favorite being "Burn The Floor". I LOVED IT!! We had a balcony cabin and our cabin was very comfortable with lots of storage space. The bathroom was a good size as well. The food in the specialty restaurants was very good. The main dining rooms were good, but not great. All buffets had many choices. We always frequent O'Sheehan's for the wings on every NCL cruise. I wish they would have the same menu in the bar area of O'Sheehan's as they do in the restaurant area instead of a very limited menu in the bar area. If there was more seating in the restaurant then the limited menu in the bar would be okay but we always had to wait for a table in the restaurant. Embarkation was a nightmare with traffic, but it was Mardi Gras in New Orleans and 2 ships were unloading passengers and reloading passengers so it was very congested. Overall, I'd do this ship again and again. Can't wait for the Getaway to come to New Orleans as we will definitely be sailing on that ship!! Read Less

They made this cruise something that we will never forget. Our room steward was over the top! She did everything to make us comfortable. She anticipated our needs before we had to ask. We choose this cruise because a large group was going and invited us. We found that the layout of the ship was strange, a lot of the areas to gather were to small. The rooms with balcony were really small also compared to other cruise lines. The service in the restaurants and bars were extremely slow! The servers were also kind of rude, not friendly at all. More like you were bothering them, this did not make for a fun relaxing vacation. You had to ask numerous times for a drink refill at a specialty restaurant. A lot of the bars around the ship close really early. We thought maybe this was just us, but we spoke to quite a few people on this cruise and we heard the same from all of them. They couldn’t wait to get off. I really do not feel like we expect to much, we are really easy going. I never complain and never leave reviews, but I just really could not believe the lack of service and lack of staff and friendliness this ship was lacking. Extremely disappointed! Read Less
