Treated ourselves to a deluxe cabin

The ultra all inclusive service by Saga was the main  attraction when booking , transport door to door , insurance , excursions were excellent .

On arrival the time from being dropped off at the terminal to eating lunch in the open sitting Grill was less than 20 minutes . Booking the included alternative dinning was no problem booking the 3 venues for out 14 day cruise .

The food without exception was very good only beaten by Viking Ocean and Cunard Queens Grill .

The ship only 4 years old was immaculate and spotless , the standard cabin small in comparison to others but well looked after and included a turn down service with chocolate on the pillow each evening .

The entertainment for a sub 1000 passenger ship was exceptional and the crew show one of the best we have ever seen.

The bars are well located although when the Britannia lounge was busy service was extremely slow waiting on one  occasion over 45 minutes for a couple of drinks , I did mention this in the mid cruise questionnaire and then never waited more than a couple of minutes for the last 7 days .

The pool area was great for 5 days when then Sun was shining apart from that of no use really as it didn’t have a retractable roof like many other lines , feel this is a design fault as Saga only cruise from the UK .

There is one issue when standing behind the funnel it bellows out soot stains your cloths and deck furniture , unfortunately it’s a known issue that hasn’t been addressed . The was no direct view over the bow from the public areas which was a shame with numerous sea days .

Ports were the usual canary island calls , the excursions well organised, good value for the non included options .

The staff are Saga’s best asset, they are brilliant, fantastic and go above and beyond to exceed expectations. Saga provide an extremely polished cruise service only let down by the marketing and allowing far to many large electric mobility scooters driving by inexperienced drivers who endanger the welfare of crew and other passengers, on more than one occasion they were reversed out of elevators’ at high speed nearly running waiting folk over , the company should take immediate action to not allow such dangerous vehicles on board , they block walkways and in an emergency would pose severe issues . Saga market the cruise as a boutique experience for 50 plus cruisers , its most definitely NOT BOUTIQUE as how many boutique resorts / hotels have formal dress codes like Saga , it’s a traditional ( not boutique) cruising experience. We are in our sixties and were in the youngest 5% of the 960 passengers’ with the average age approaching early eighties, many other first time Saga cruisers referred to the experience as a “ floating care home “  when booking directly with Saga they should advise that the majority of passengers are of a very elderly demographic. It’s a real shame as the cruise was great but the amount of electric vehicles made us feel unsafe when moving around the ship . If Saga address these safety issues  we would book again but until then will revert back to Viking Ocean .

A cruise of two sections 

This was our first cruise with Saga.

Door to door service was excellent,  the driver telephoned the day before our outward journey to confirm pick up time, he arrived on time and with a short service station stop we soon arrived at Portsmouth.  Check in was quick and efficient,  short ride on shuttle bus to ship, slight blip with gangway and tide but we soon boarded. 

We were shown to cabin by member of staff and then went to grill for roast beef lunch.

Watched muster safety video and then reported to muster Station, very concerning that unless assistance was pre-booked some elderly quests had to walk up 6 flights of stairs.

Allocated time for first night dinner, then open dining for remainder of cruise.

We tried the 3 speciality dining  and found food just as good in main dining room.

Cabins had complementary drinking water and fruit which was replaced daily. Robe and slippers provided as were toiletries. 

Tea and coffee in room with carton of milk in fridge.

Passenger had to be airlifted off ship due to medical emergency on first night.There were more code Alpha throughout the cruise where passengers needed medical assistance. 

The anti bacterial gel was replaced by request to was hands at entrance to the Grill due to coughs and colds on board. Coughing increased by week 2.

We had to call for assistance to help an elderly lady who was vomiting on open deck.

Migrant boat containing 10 males delayed ship as had to wait for Spanish border control to take over.

Entertainment was not to our taste, comedian, circus, play and classic music. The resident group were more of a fill in with a set play list.

Audley Anderson was a great soul/Motown singer, and the Cliff Richard tribute was very good. Jules Holland was appearing at the end of cruise and allocated tickets were given out.

Formal nights weren't anything special with one of them for Brittania lounge members only.

3 sail away parties were more like showcast staff party.  The cocktails were good though.

The spa was expensive, the shop had limited stock with inflated prices.

The food and dinks were first class as were the staff.

Towels were placed on sunbeds daily, water station on sun deck.

Self service Ice cream on tap, jars of sweets to help yourself to.

This was our 5th cruise with Saga and the 2nd this year in 2023.  

 For this voyage we had breakfast in our room or the balcony as we had the space and so missed the chaotic crowds in the restaurants.  Everyone for some reason wants to eat at 09.30 even though the place closes shortly after.  If you go earlier it is a lot easier.  When at a destination, we know when the others are getting off via our news sheet given to us and find the restaurants so lovely and quiet.

Fine dining restaurants were very pleasant as usual and they always fitted you in when you wanted an extra booking, if there was space so you can eat more than once, all you need to do is ask.  Some passengers weren’t bothered surprisingly but they didn’t know what they were missing.

Staffing is excellent as usual and always on hand to help.  

Entertainment was very good, lots of variety or if you want peace and quiet, just watch the shows on the tv in your room.

The only negative was the formal nights, lovely to be able to dress up but some choose to look as though they had just come out of Tesco, perhaps these passengers have never been on a cruise before or maybe a cheap one where you did not have to dress up.  Shame really as I am sure they felt uncomfortable when seeing gents in evening dress suits and ladies in beautiful dresses,

We did a Med cruise which was Flavours of France, Spain and Portugal, which was very pleasing especially Santander which was so busy but what a beautiful, clean place.  Bordeaux was magical, so much to do and see.  We were lucky to have an overnight there and we could see why.  Two places we had not visited before and would gladly visit again, especially Bordeaux as when leaving, it looked like the whole town came out to see us off and there a magnificent bridge we go under and instead of opening in the middle like all bridges, it lifted up in the middle, which is a sight to behold.  To us maybe, but apparently to the locals it drives them mad as it creates so much traffic, c’est la vie.  We finished the cruise at St Mary’s, Isle of Scilly but sadly the weather was against us, as it poured down shortly after arriving.  Well we were near the UK!

Some passengers have commented on the ages of the passengers but so what.  We aren’t young and meet lovely people of all ages and even the young entertainers had fun with us.  We used the gym on a regular basis and so did a few others.  

Obviously with Saga cruises we are taken there and at the end the drivers are waiting to bring you home, which is an added bonus.  Saga cruises are not cheap but you get what you paid for and we booked 2 cruises last year for next year and can’t wait to get on board again.

We felt we needed a break after some unwelcome medical issues and settled on this, our second, Saga cruise just recently. We were again on Sprit of Discovery - and Captain Darin Bowland was again in command. We always feel that the Captain sets the tone for any cruise and it was obvious that the Captain was well liked by his crew which meant that everything was relaxed and well organised. 

The routine of an initial sea day followed by some interesting port calls and a final sea day was well organised. Particularly welcome was the day in the beautiful Geiranger after which we stayed overnight at anchor and then had a full day sailing out of the fjord to sea. Well planned by someone. 

The Saga offer is very popular and deservedly so. It would be easy to put the package together more cheaply but with everything included it is much more relaxing knowing that everything you need was paid for months ago! Apparently we had over 600 first time Saga ocean cruisers aboard (and over 100 first time cruisers too) - which is a bit worrying if Saga gets too popular! They could do with more ships to help keep the prices reasonable...

We could only eat once in any of the three speciality restaurants which was reasonable in order to allow everyone to have a chance to eat in them. On longer cruises you get a chance to eat in all of them at least once. 

The stand-out experience? The crew show. It was almost a  sell-out and the performers got a deserved standing ovation. If only all cruise companies realised what talent they had aboard! There was probably too much entertainment provided for a 7-night cruise - but too much is better than too little.

Saint John (New Brunswick)

At 62 and 70, we were certainly not the youngest passengers, although it’s fair to say we were definitely not the oldest! We’ve been on a lot of cruises where passengers were much less agile and seemed much older. Perhaps Saga attracts more affluent guests who are in better health.

The reason for picking this cruise was to celebrate our 35th anniversary. Our 25th had been very different as my husband had just undergone a quadruple bypass. Ten years ago, I was just very pleased to have him home from hospital.

Saga includes everything. And I mean everything. From insurance to being picked up at the door. And everything it includes is high end. We were picked up in a limousine by a smartly dressed chauffeur who helped us with our cases. We then picked up a fellow passenger, an 86-year-old who kept us entertained throughout the journey and indeed throughout the cruise. Most of the time, she (and other passengers) made us feel like the doddery ones when she was still dancing until whatever time and we’d already gone to bed!

The food and service was exceptional, I was always spoilt for choice by the menu, and yes, on occasions had a couple of extra items. One evening, we were sharing a table with someone who chose the fish and chips while I ate lobster and my husband had a mushroom risotto. For someone who has always hated rice, he loved it and finished it all. There really was something for everyone.

For our anniversary, somehow we got an extra bottle of champagne the day before, addressed to Mr & Mrs, rather than Mr & Mr. The cruise ship were mortified by their mistake as they do try to pay attention to detail. Let’s just say we were treated like royalty on our anniversary which we spent in the East to West restaurant. However, according to the wonderful F&B Director Julian, it was no more than anyone else would get. Having been on many other cruiselines, it is fair to say that we felt far more looked after by a very large margin. We can only liken our experience to a top end river cruise, rather than an ocean cruise.

Before we went, I was talking to a friend who asked if it would be like a scene from the film Cocoon, where an alien puts something in the hydrotherapy pool making the residents of the old age home young again. Having started the cruise with a bad back, I can confirm that there was definitely something in the amazing hydrotherapy pool – or perhaps the mattress – as my back got so much better during the cruise!

Each night, we’d enjoy the entertainment and thought the Cruise Director – and all of the hard working entertainment team – were brilliant. The only thing we didn’t like was at the end of the excellent staff show, having sang “Heal The World”, everyone came on with Union Flags, making it look more like something out of North Korea rather than a meeting of so many different countries and cultures. Surely a variety of flags should have been present, after all, staff wore a name badge with a flag from their country. In the lounges, a few staff wore an LGBT flag badge which made us feel additionally welcome.

There was a smattering of LGBT guests (one was travelling with her Mum, who happened to be Dorothy, so we had an actual “Friends of Dorothy” meeting, however, it would have been nice if one had been included in the daily programme (probably now called an LGBT meetup), as happens on most other cruise ships.

Our cabin was excellent and our cabin steward was amazing. When we got to the cabin, we found a whole box of decaffeinated tea and we just happened to mention we preferred Red Bush tea. 30 seconds later, Mario arrived with a box of Red Bush tea. The item we thought missing was a little saucer for used teabags. When we mentioned this, as if by magic, it appeared. Nothing was ever a problem for him – or any of the staff.

We were on board for a week and only had three stops, all in Norway, so had plenty of time to enjoy the ship – we even had time to watch a film on the TV – a recent one that we’d meant to see at the cinema. We had to watch it in instalments as there was generally something to do, even if it was just walking round the ship or nattering to other guests who were all lovely and very friendly.

It was our third time in Bergen and each time we’ve been lucky with the weather. Even though we’d been before, we thoroughly enjoyed the included orientation tour. We also enjoyed our time in Geiranger and just walked round and up the steps next to the waterfall which was very picturesque. We were surprised that as we were on a smaller ship, our third stop, Sandnes, was quite a way from the town. We went on the included excursion to Stavanger, but regretted not getting the shuttle which would have given us more time in the city and perhaps a chance to visit Sandnes itself, which was apparently quite a walk from the dock.

The Captain seemed a little shier than others we’ve encountered, so we didn’t see him around the ship much, but he made us laugh every time he mispronounced Geiranger as “Guy-ranger”, really not sure why he couldn’t say gay! That said, there was an excellent Q&A with the Cruise Director where he really did come to life and was very engaging.

Would we go with Saga again? In a heartbeat. Their prices look expensive, but when you weigh up all the extras you have to pay for on other lines, it soon becomes clear that it’s actually excellent value for money.

Mum is a seasoned Saga customer and I can see the things she values in them as it's not all bad but its more Premier Inn than a luxury boutique hotel experience 

The pick up was great and check in/boarding smooth

The cabins are nice and well maintained - housekeeping excellent

Food is decent too but the F&B service is mixed. English is spoken but not always understood past the basics. Deviate from what's offered at your peril. Supervision non existent. Anticipating guest needs rarely happens. They will happily stand at their stations and not approach you unless you make yourself known. Similarly the officers are stand offish. The cruise director is rarely seen. I think they leave the staff to get on with it and have a better time than the guests. 

The guest service manager is another mistake. I fed back that the signs to get off the ship were confusing. Fellow passengers and I proceeded to deck 4 as instructed and found ourselves in the wrong part of the ship. There was no signage let alone anymore to direct guests on deck 4 by the medical centre. We were supposed to have taken the lifts at the other end  of the ship. I had to rescue an elderly passenger and help him get to the right side. I fed this back and was met with an abrupt dismissal without discussion. This is all too familiar with Saga - accept what you get because we don't value you 

Excursions sold out very quickly - wrote to Saga to advise how disappointed we were. Nice reply please be patient they said  then no contact since then.

Take it or leave - Saga don't care 

Initially pickup and drop off service was very good - on time, pleasant, helpfull drivers, (City Elite Cars) happy to lug the weighty luggage around.  Took about 1 hour for the luggage to appear in our cabins. 

Cabin not enormous, but larger than river cruise, under bed storage really useful.  More pillows than we knew what to do with.  We were at the front of the ship, high up (level 10), and try as we might, could hear nothing of the engines - surreal.

As many have reported, food is so good as to be dangerous (keep going back for more).  One of the specialist restaurants, East to West, gave us the best meal we have had for years, Indian Chef.  Support staff were a joy, with good suggestions and clear explanations.  Other restaurants very good too, slick and eager to respond - options to share a 4x table or to select a 2x especially if early, depending on how sociable you feel.  

A one page, double sided "Daily Itinery" offering what is a available on the day produced, along with any changes to times - very useful.

We were lucky, bright sunshine for three of the excursions chosen, final excursion (Lysefjort cruise) was under overcast skies, but was cancelled at the last moment due to mechanical breakdown.  Excursion fee credited to our account on the day of cancellation, and our card reimbursed before we left the boat - cannot ask for anything better than this.  

Books are back in the library area (following Covid), which is a very relaxing venue with coffee and cookies constantly on tap.  

Exit from the ship is phased to ensure orderly collection of luggage, but could still be improved - calling the transport to get you back home appeared not to be as slick as the rest of the operation, but that could be due to space outside the terminal?

Overall at a loss to see how Saga could improve their approach - this was our first ocean cruise, and we are now converts.  Only limitation we found was the WiFi, which was painfully slow and we found it difficult to run a business remotely. As there are REALLY no extras (except fine wines, hair dressing etc.,), and this is not just marketing hype, the overall value was excellent.  On our first day back home, we are planning for the next cruise with Saga!

Restored faith in sea cruise descriptions

Last month we took our second Saga Cruise on Spirit of Discovery.  

It was not meant to be because we had originally booked to sail on the third voyage of the new Oceania Vista to celebrate our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.  But when we were on our first Saga cruise last August we were told that Vista would be late being delivered and our cruise for May 2023 was cancelled.   My wife looked around for an alternative and perhaps it was fitting that we chose another Saga cruise as a replacement. 

We departed from Portsmouth on Coronation Day, 6th May, on the 15 night ‘Highlights of Spain and the Balearics’.  We had previously visited all the ports and felt under no pressure to book excursions; we were just looking for a relaxing holiday.

The taxi pick up from home was excellent with a friendly driver in a very new car, and embarkation could not have been easier. There was no waiting around and the check-in staff were very helpful and friendly.  As usual, on boarding we were taken straight to our cabin and our luggage arrived shortly afterwards.

The itinerary was three days at sea followed by Malaga, Sete, Mahon, Palma, Barcelona, Cadiz, and then three sea days back to Dover. There were two further sea days between the ports, making eight in all.  We like sea days and the sea was kind, but for some this is a downside of sailing from the UK to the Mediterranean. Another downside of cruising with a smaller company is that we seemed to get poor berths in a couple of ports despite the Spirit of Discovery’s  relatively small size.

Whilst the sea was kind, the weather was not. Shortly before we left the UK southern Spain had been basking in a 40ºC heatwave but after Malaga the sun had exhausted itself and the weather was too often dull. There were periods of sunshine but there were also cold winds.

Some of the passengers were older and more infirm than on our first Saga cruise (which we took as the world was opening up again after Covid) but the overall impression is of a blessed generation enjoying a long and pretty healthy retirement. 

As we had all been travelling on Coronation Day the ship showed a recording of the Coronation service in the theatre on the first day at sea which was well attended. Saga also gave us all two decorated bottles of wine and a tin of sweets, and a gala dinner to celebrate the event.

The cabins are spacious and comfortable, and the bathrooms among the best we have experienced. Overall the ship is looking great and the cleaning and ongoing maintenance keep it that way.  However some areas on the ship were often cold, particularly the theatre which, when audiences were light, was freezing cold.

The free internet was poor, and sometimes very poor. This is something Saga needs to improve; nowadays we are all dependant on our phones and tablets.

The staff without exception are friendly and very attentive to the needs of a more elderly clientele, and happy to adjust the bar and food service to meet individual whims.

Now the food. Overall it was very good, if unexciting, but there were some exceptions.  The breakfast in the Grill was very hit and miss.  Some of the buffet food was dried up and lukewarm having spent too long under hot lamps. One can order freshly cooked boiled and poached eggs but these, too, were hit and miss, sometimes arriving overcooked.  One of the worst features of breakfast in the Grill was the unpleasant toast. The bread is pretoasted and then put very briefly through the toaster again before service. It immediately goes cold and tastes like claggy cardboard. Breakfast in the Main Dining Room was much better. The butter served on the ship is very salty, particularly for those of us that only use unsalted butter at home. Coffee, even when ordered specially always seemed to be served not much hotter than lukewarm.

Another annoying thing was that steak had been taken off the ‘available everyday options’ and replaced by pork steak. When I queried this I was told that they had had a problem with getting supplies. If so why didn’t they pick up fresh supplies at one of the ports we visited?  To be fair, when I first raised the issue the Dining Room Manager arranged for me to have a steak the following night which was great.

The three “speciality” restaurants each offer very limited three course menus whereas the Main Dining Room offers four courses. I was very sorry to see that some of the most desirable menu items had been removed since we were on the ship last August.  We were particularly disappointed that the sharing seafood platter was no longer available in South Coast.  This must be a cost cutting exercise. Having tried all three restaurants again I’m afraid that, compared with comparable offerings on other lines, Saga’s speciality restaurants aren’t very special.

Another oddity of Saga is that the evening menus in the Main Dining Room and the Grill are exactly the same which amounts to a ‘take it, or leave it’ approach. Other cruise lines offer alternative dishes in their equivalent of the Grill and even the addition of something simple like daily pasta or pizza dishes would make a big difference.

There is a wide range of included drinks and all the wine is perfectly acceptable.  It’s a shame that only crisps and peanuts are offered in the bars, the addition of olives would have been much appreciated.

On the same ship last August there was a significant problem with black ‘smuts’ from the funnel which landed on the open deck areas and balconies in certain conditions.  Although we had been told this was going to be sorted out it is still a problem and it’s very annoying to get oily smuts on one’s clothes.

When we joined the ship we were told that our booked excursion in Menorca had been cancelled. There was no proper explanation and as we had been looking forward to revisiting the location of our first holiday together this was very disappointing.

The onboard lecturers were a mixed bag.  We enjoyed the talks by a former auctioneer and the port lectures were the best I have heard.  The entertainment was on a par for the size of ship and the musicians were good.

Our cabin steward, Cristano was brilliant.  On our wedding anniversary, and later for my wife’s birthday, we came back in the evening to find he had decorated our cabin, and throughout the cruise he ensured our cabin was always spick and span.

Disembarcation was well organised.  Once we were called there was a delay in our pick up for the journey home but the Saga staff looked after us and sorted it out pretty quickly. The driver, once again, was excellent.

Overall, an enjoyable cruise.

Some thoughts on our second Saga cruise

I went on this short cruise for 4 things. Good nights sleep, Excellent food, onboard entertainment , and outside of Saga's control , good weather. I picked this cruise to try out Portsmouth as a  cruise terminal. This was excellent, The negatives started in the cabin, I had the same  cabin on Discovery just before Covid struck. I was not impressed with the bed then, too hard, and I had asked for a soft overlay, which they eventually provided, still a most uncomfortable sleep. Because of the short cruise we were only allowed to book only 1 speciality restaurant. The food in the main dining room was average to a 3 star ship, yet although seats were available in the speciality restaurants we were not allowed to take them  The speciality was the East to West" restaurant booked by accident, I had marinated steak, I left it as it was over-marinated, nobody asked me why I had left it.. The first day at sea on the way to Brest was sunny and enjoyable. Brest was cold and the shuttle would not start, Brest looks like a Post- War 2 town and we stayed on the shuttle. Next port was Falmouth, and it rained and rained.  Next day  same at Plymouth. Which leaves the quizes, my favourite on board entertainment, this was carried out by a Scot , who with my poor hearing I could not understand. a question A lotof people had the same problem. So to sum up poor food and poor onboard entertainment. The weather finished a most unsatisfactory cruise. A pity as the Saga concept is good , but cost cutting on the food is not on at their prices.

Cost cutting I think

For some time we have thought about a Saga sea cruise, we are of an age when we thought we would be the right age demographic, i.e. mid 60’s and the thought of being picked up at the door and taken to the port by a liveried chauffeur rather than suffer the tedious queueing and waiting at an airport, being herded around like cattle and paying a fortune for parking was something of a draw. The opportunity presented itself with a five night taster cruise from Portsmouth exploring the Western Maritime Ports aboard Spirit of Discovery.

Right up front we would acknowledge that Saga did so well in so many areas and potentially it could have been a really amazing cruise. The chauffer service was excellent both ways, the welcome at Portsmouth, the boarding process, being escorted to our cabin and the speed at which luggage arrived. First class. The service throughout from the crew was as good as it gets, as regulars with Cunard and past Silverseas passengers we felt the crew to passenger ratio was higher, service was as good or better, and they were really caring.

The ship itself is beautiful, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Our ‘basic’ cabin was good, it was a standard cabin and did everything it should but storage was a little limited. The TV info system worked really well and there were extensive entertainment options including loads of films and, interestingly, a live feed of all the shows, lectures, and entertainment from the theatre. First time we have seen that. 

So with such glowing comments why a 3 star review and why would we never cruise Saga again?? 

Two main reasons, one emotional and one being misled. Let me explain.

Saga are clearly a cruise line for the older passenger, we accept that, we understand we are now the older passenger and a more refined, sophisticated ship with absolutely no children is attractive. However we are fit healthy and active passengers. We are mobile, we use the stairs rather than the lifts, we use the gym. A large number of passengers on our cruise could not. We would estimate perhaps 20% of  passengers were unable to walk unaided without strollers, sticks, wheelchairs etc. Many were clearly very frail. God bless them, and us, for that could well be myself or my wife in the future and all credit to every one of them for tackling life head on and not letting their frailty stop them. So emotionally it was a bit depressing taking a holiday and seeing what the future might hold for us, often being in a lounge that felt more like a visit to an elderly relatives care home. Again a mention for the crew, especially in the buffet, who showed so much patience and empathy.

Misled?   The Sage website, their glossy brochures and their pre cruise ‘Life on Board’ document all shout about their ‘Extra-Special Speciality Dining’ they go on, ‘Deciding where to dine is all part of the boutique cruise experience, and you have the freedom to visit the restaurants in your own time every evening’ and ‘Fine dining on board in a choice of five restaurants including speciality restaurants’

We were only allowed to eat in one speciality restaurant the whole cruise, we were barred from the other two and forced to eat in the Grand Dining Room. We were told that spaces are limited so passengers are only allowed to choose one speciality restaurant per cruise. We think that their brochures etc are misleading, we were refused what was promised when we booked. Evenings on board and the dining experience in particular are so important to us on a cruise that genuinely, we would never have booked with Saga if we knew that this would happen.  

Saga do so much so well and have a demographic that love them, there were many, many passengers on board that loved the experience. One couple were celebrating their one thousandth night but our taster cruise showed us that age is just a number and that we are much too young for a Saga cruise, even well into our 60’s!
