Which Cruise Lines Have Restarted Cruising?

(Updated 1:47 p.m. EDT) -- While the global COVID-19 pandemic has shut down most cruise lines since mid-March, there are areas of the world where some ships are sailing.

In most cases, these are single-nationality cruises calling in at a limited number of ports, usually in the country of origin. Nearly all are in Europe or Asia, as U.S. cruise lines are on an operational pause until at least October, bound by the ruling from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although options are still limited, and in most cases are nationality and government-advice dependent, here is a round-up of which lines have restarted cruising on what ships, as well as where they are going and who c

When Are Cruise Lines Around the World Expected To Resume Service?

(Updated 12:42 p.m. EDT) -- With ocean and river cruise lines temporarily suspending service around the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping track of the seemingly minute-by-minute changes to the cruise industry can be challenging.

Most cruise lines voluntarily paused sailings for the meantime after being faced with port closures; a lack of suitable infrastructure, including flights; and increased travel restrictions that change on a country-by-country basis. CLIA,the Cruise Lines International Association that represents most cruise lines, issued a further volunatary suspension in operations through October 31.

Seabourn Cuts First Steel on Seabourn Venture Sister Cruise Ship

(5:25 p.m. EDT) -- Seabourn has cut the first steel on its second purpose-built luxury expedition vessel at the T. Mariotti shipyard in Italy.

The as-yet-unnamed vessel will be a direct sister to the upcoming Seabourn Venture, which is also under construction. The latter has been delayed due to the ongoing global health pandemic and is scheduled to launch in December 2021.

Seabourn's newest ship will set sail in 2022.

"With two brand-new ultra-luxury expedition ships now under construction, we are setting a new standard of luxury and adventure," said Josh Leibowitz, president of Seabourn. "This milestone further underscores our commitment to the expedition travel ca

Virgin Voyages Introduces New Cruise Itineraries for Valiant Lady

(4:55 p.m. EDT) -- Virgin Voyages introduced a series of new itineraries for its second modern cruise ship, Valiant Lady, for the 2021 cruise season.

After debuting in the Mediterranean next year, Valiant Lady will join sister-ship Scarlet Lady in the Caribbean for the 2021-2022 winter season. The ship will also inaugurate a series of new Caribbean itineraries for Virgin, including six- and eight-night sailings along with two brand-new destinations in the Caribbean.

Beginning in November 2021, Valiant Lady will offer six-night voyages roundtrip from Miami that call on Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Virgin's own Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas.

Masks, Plexiglass and Temp Checks -- the New Normal for River Cruising

Confidence is on the rise -- in Europe at least -- as dozens of river cruise ships ply the rivers and canals of Europe.

In fact, river cruises have been operating safely here since June -- and I was fortunate enough to be on one of the first, A-ROSA on the Douro.

(There has been just one COVID-19 outbreak, on a Croisi river cruise ship in Portugal at the end of its cruise, infecting two passengers and five crew members.)

However, all these lines have one thing in common -- they are all European. The huge fleets from U.S.-based cruise lines in Europe such as Viking, Uniworld and AmaWaterways are idle, except for one.
