This cruise experience was absolutely amazing. We had a very good time. The food was tremendous at every single complimentary restaurant. The buffet had so many different options. The shows offered were also very entertaining and well put together. The crew on board was so outgoing and fun. They all made this first time experience far better. Shout out to the washy-washy guy. I didn’t meet a single staff member that was rude or lazy. The activities onboard such as the water slides were thrilling and fun for the whole family. The private island Norwegian has is also very relaxing and beautiful. The cruise is for people of all ages. Seniors, couples, large families, new borns. The cabin was very modern and had a beautiful view through the balcony. It was a bit small like you would expect but it was still really nice. Overall we had an amazing experience with NCL and definetly look forward to sailing with them again. Read Less

My husband and I traveled alone for our 30th Wedding Anniversary on this cruise. We booked a veranda cabin on the Navigation deck via Holland and not a travel agent. Embarkation was very easy. Although the woman taking care of us had to be reminded by us on the procedure!! She was also lacking in English communication skills! The wait time to board the ship was longer than usual since this was the first time Nieuw Statendam had entered an American Port so she had a lengthy inspection by the Coast Guard. Understandable. No worries! The Nieuw Statendam is a beautiful ship. It’s very well thought out in its design. You notice this as you walk around the decks, small things like handwashing stations in the Lido...Great idea!! I like how you are served your food in the Lido by the staff and not self service. This kept the germs down and the floors cleaner! The food was protected from the passengers behind a glass partition. We never had to touch a serving spoon or wait to be served. The selections in the Lido did not taste like cafeteria food. It had more of a gourmet flair to it! I Will say that the only item that was lacking on the ship was the self serve ice machine in the Lido. If it worked it all, the best you could hope for was a slow drip of watery slush! The no touch sensor on this ice machine didn’t work properly and I saw passengers putting their hands and used glasses all over the dispenser area trying to get it to work. This was not sanitary! The servers had good ice available in their pitchers, so ask for it instead. The food was excellent everywhere we ate on the ship! Our night in the Pinnacle was enjoyable with amazing meal selections. Our evening at Canaletto was a bit of a disappointment. An area of the Lido is transformed into Canaletto for the evening. The same staff that serves you in the morning and daytime in Lido are also serving you in the evening at Canaletto. I just didn’t feel like I was in a special venue. There wasn’t a feel of specialty dining that one would be willing to pay extra for. The food was good (not excellent) but timeliness of delivery was lacking. We had a late reservation which we will not do again anywhere on any ship! It wasn’t the service of the waitstaff that caused an issue but there appeared to be a back up in the kitchen that caused our entrées to be served over one hour behind our appetizer. Gala night in The Main Diningroom should not be missed! Service was outstanding as was the food. As always with Hollard America the main dining room is something to behold. Our favorite dinner while onboard was in Tamarind. This venue has the best view for dining and ambience on the ship! The half round booth facing aft is by far THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE! I recommend an early reservation for this venue. We watched the sun set and saw the venue lighting change to a soft romantic tone. There was a WOW factor here! Service was amazing!! Be aware when purchasing ahead of time the Signature Dining Package that only two of the five specialty restaurants are included.....The Pinnacle and Canaletto. I made the mistake of assuming all specialty restaurants were available for selection. This is not the case! FYI...Rudi’s Sel de Mer is al la carte pricing. All menu selections are priced separately. The entertainment on board the ship was outstanding. Lincoln Center Stage, Billboard and the Rolling Stone venues. Our favorite was The BB Kings Allstars direct from Beale Street at BB Kings (the club venue that was transformed from Lincoln Center Stage after 9pm) with lots of fun dancing! This band Rocked! The veranda cabin we had #8022 was comfortable with 2 cabin steward‘s Wenjoldy and George that were always available to us with smiles! Service was impeccable! There were 6 electrical and USB outlets. We took a ships approved multi outlet with us and didn’t need it! There is plenty of good lighting in the cabin with reading lights and electrical outlets of each side off the bed. The cabin door is metal but if you want to decorate it, heavy duty magnets need to be used! The bathroom was very well laid out with a large full shower and glass door. The Bollini Bath Fixtures were easy to use and quite beautiful to say the least. There are handholds and a foot rail in the shower that were strategically placed for safety. One thing that was new to us was having to put your cabin key card in a slot by the door inside your cabin to activate the interior lighting. A couple of times I was caught in the bathroom and my husband went for coffee with his card and 30 seconds later the lights went out on me! Something we had to figure out on our own if someone stays behind in the cabin. Beds were comfortable. There was a large hanging closet with plenty of room and a huge television at the foot of our bed. I highly recommend loading the NAVIGATOR program onto your phone, laptop or iPad once you’re on the ship. This program is for your easiest way of getting in touch with Guest Services if you have a problem. It’s much easier than making a phone call, telling your Cabin Stewards or being on hold forever or standing in line at guest services on the third floor. Your problem will be handled in a timely manner. This program also gives you up-to-date information on entertainment food venues, making reservations and many other necessities while on the ship . You do not need to have a purchased the ships wi fi to activate this. There are directions in a bifold paper on the desk when you arrive in your cabin on how to access the NAVIGATOR. But remember, this cannot be accessed until you are on the ship. The price for BLEND the wine blending and tasting venue is $79.00 a person or $99.00 a couple. We did not partake! There was a self service beer and soft drink dispenser that you paid for by the ounce near the indoor Lido Pool Bar. No waiting! At NOTES, the brown liquor tasting venue, one can have a shot of the overly rated 20 year old Pappy Van Winkle for up to $207.00. OR the 12 year old Pappy for $109.00 a shot! There are other brands available more moderately priced. I did not visit the spa on this trip. Our cruise just was not long enough! If shopping for Liquor aboard the ship, the prices are not posted on the bottles. You get the price list from the shop attendant. The ships artwork had a modern feel to it which was very interesting. Every elevator lobby had some sort of avant-garde art piece which was worth seeking out on a self guided art crawl. Our Captain Sybe de Boer was professional, personable and approachable. Our safety and comfort was his NUMBER ONE concern! Our Cruise Director Ross McTaggart was easy to understand and always ready to give information. The Hotel Director Don Habets saw that the few issues we had on the ship were IMMEDIATELY taken care of. Thank you Don!! Adriana Strugala in Guest Services is the person to reach if you have a complicated situation to address! Thank you Adriana. Disembarkation was very easy for us since we brought only carry on luggage for this short voyage. We were given a color coded departure tag to exit the ship when called. In spite of the fact of the Government shutdown, there were a few TSA Supervisors working to assure entry. I (we) would recommend this ship and its crew for future voyages. I would like to be on a longer one next time. Read Less

I left Durban port on the 19th December 2018 and the staff were excellent on embarking the ship. The embarkation and disembarkation was a breeze with MSC staff and crew assisting you all the way. I had a wonderful experience as it was my first trip and cannot wait to cruise with MSC again. The dining was terrific with a variety of different things to choose from , the dining staff were great and on "ball" for everything. I really enjoyed my shore excursion to the Portuguese Island as it was my first time on a boat. MSC is a must for everybody. The ships interior was one of a kind with amazing lighting and entertainment. The theatre was beautiful and I really enjoyed the shows. The entertainment staff really made my trip enjoyable with the games where everybody partook. The rooms service was excellent with just a phone call away I could get food delivered straight to my door. My room was outstanding even better than when I saw pictures of it on the internet. Every time I stepped out and back to my room was I was spotless. Now that's an amazing trip. Read Less

Traveling is my forte, and a cruise was on my bucket list for 2018 with my family. Our first family holiday! Which we enjoyed thoroughly. Excellent service all round, great food, entertainment and activities. Embarkation and disembarkation was good. Dining was fantastic, service of the waiters and waitresses were excellent. Very friendly and always obliging. My son enjoyed the excursion as his goal is to work on a cruise liner someday. We absolutely loved the island, a day well spent!! Not forgetting the boat ride to the island! It was amazing with the cool breeze and water splashing on us, enjoyed it so much! The people on the island were so friendly, the markets sold beautiful souveniers and clothing. I will definitely cruise again, it's on my bucket list for 2019!!! This time i will pack much lighter as i was'nt aware that it was so cool and casual, and nobody really notices what you wear. Everyone has so much fun!!! Read Less

This cruise was a gift and I was grateful for the opportunity, but let me be frank with you in the following description. Little did we know the disappointment we’d meet at the very entrance with their prolonged entry wait. Services bragged about the boat docking early at 7am and said we should be boarding soon, that was around 3pm. We didn’t board till almost 7pm. There are numerous inconsistencies with information. It was difficult to be positive given the back to back frustrations. They did do their part to serve alcohol endlessly, which is honestly the only perk to riding this cruise line. The food was comparable to school rated lunches. There was hardly any quality. The dining services really tried to make up for what was lacking on the ship. They were great and did their best. The entertainment shows were subpar, which I guess good be ameliorated by alcohol consumption. I was tired of being asked condescendingly if I was of age to drinks, easy fix: mark it on the embarkation card that obviously took so long to make. Might as well put all the necessary information on there. The daily itinerary needs to be revamped as there was so much clutter and the most important information wasn’t highlighted nor clear. There were several areas with severely musty smells and the crew struggled to relieve areas of the stench. The towels and bed sheets were stained with questionable substances and made its cleanliness questionable. The worst part of it all was my inability to rest because of their BED BUG INFESTION on level 8 (and possibly beyond). 3 sets of cabins from our group were later confirmed to have traces of bed bugs. That NEEDS to be a priority to resolve. A lot of passerby crew members were smartasses and that was an unnecessary amount of sass I witnessed repeatedly directed at many people on the ship. The crew really tried to make a pleasant vacation, but there were too many areas of disenchantment that they couldn’t make up for it. Hence the draw to ride the cruise because of INCLUDED alcohol. It’s not freee because you pay the price with all of these discomforts. Their 2013 remodeling should’ve been more drastic because it didn’t do it much justice in this modern day era of cruising. Also with their obsession with spraying alcohol or hand sanitizer did not cover up the fact that several of the soap dispensers weren’t working in the public restrooms. To conclude I would not recommend this cruise for families especially with minors seeing all the inappropriate behavior of everyone taking advantage of the unlimited drinks which were poorly handled, given that half the time crew asked for the room key to swipe and the other half they gave up because it was too much work on top of the demand. Trying to find the perfect gift is always daunting, luckily i decided to gift my husband a cruise with the Msc Musica, Upon Arrival at the harbour, There was a que to get into check in and to leave your luggage, each step was even more exciting as its just one step closer to boarding, When we reached check in and all was in order my two kids, husband and i literally ran to the boarding area, We stopped quickly at the refreshments area to grab a drink and off we were ( this was so though full after waiting in the ques, a thirst quench was just what we needed) The music and the friendly staff outside just set the mood, Finally we arrived inside the ship, our passports was taken and immediately we were sent upstairs to get a wrisk band for my 7 year old, so basically this as to be worn by the child throughout the cruise, as it makes it easy to locate which cabin the child is,incase they get lost. As we explored we bought our drinks package and went on the 13th deck for our buffet lunch, this was my favourite spot throughout the cruise haha hence the weight gain, everything was perfectly set up, different types of food, bread rolls, salads, dessert, tea coffee and water is always served. We sat at a table and indulged in our scrumptious lunch btw the buffet is open 20 hours, breakfast lunch and supper, And the pizzas is thee best tasting pizzas ever, Everything is always in order as soon as u done eating theres always someone to clear up ur table. Making it easier for the next person to come in, After eating we went to our cabin to change up and went on deck to do the drill, Finally we set sail, the experience of just leaving was absolutely amazing. Everyone was filled with excitement. We had abit of a confusion with our cabin and illena from reception was the absolutely best, so friendly and she even sent up a bottle of champagne and some yummy snacks for my husband on his birthday. Theres so much to do on the ship but we mainly hung out on the deck as the kids wanted to be in the pool, there is a kiddies and teens club aswell, my 7 year old loved it and still talks about his teachers, they provide activities the entire day for the kids and believe me its so safe. They even take the kids for dinner and it's so exciting for the kiddies, Again the level of quality and security is absolutely amazing these ladies and gents are so patient and caring with the kids, Everything is always in a order, at 8pm every night we were allocated a restaurant which we could dine in, the food is absolutely amazing and our waiter was so friendly and welcoming, the manager if this restaurant was extremely rude and to be honest he was the only bad experience throughout our cruise, The shopping is a must, my husband bought me the most beautiful jewellery and the 4.5 liter drinks is absolutely well worth it, Island day: Day of island was amazing such beautiful experience, u have to get a ticket on board which will tell u what boat number u are, u go to the 4th floor and a boat awaits u, nothing to be scared about again everything is always in order and safe, when we arrived at the island the blue waters and music and views was just breathtaking. There's alot of locals selling stuff so carry some cash, it was extremely hot so we went straight to the buffet, freshly caught grilled fish and the delicious water melons and mangoes was my favourite, A dj and also a live band makes u feel so blessed just to experience this.We spent the day in the water and then finally decided to leave early as we didn't want to wait long with the kids, The boats started loading up and we finally entered the ship again, As we entered there was a gentleman handing us an ice face clothe again very well thought of as coming out from the heat, this ice cloth was a bit of heaven for us, Back to sail and after refreshing up we went on board for some activities. What amazed me was everything was always in order, the staff are all very hard working, A few are abit rude but majority are so welcoming, oh please be careful when buying drinks on the deck, if u not using ur drinks package, we paid 45 dollars for two jack Daniels and two cans of coke, yet at the bar across is was 5 dollars. So always ask the price before you purchase. The theater the night before we left was absolutely amazing we got to see the captain break some moves, so friendly so creative and overall it was definitely the best experience ooooh i forgot to mention i felt sea sick for two nights so make sure u take something and they also provide some tabs at the reception area. Would i recommended this cruise? I will be off my head not too, A lifetime experience, My Kids are still talking about it and my husband says he doesn't no how to top this for my birthday hahahah. Overall I'll be back again Read Less

We choose this cruise because was relatively cheap and great for short break. Pretty much everything was mediocre. Food very ordinary. The pantry was boring with the same food each morning. Desert station was good. The main restaurant wasn’t any better. We had really bad weather and there was not much information or updates. Never seen The Captain and I think I heard his voice twice during our 4 days cruise. Entertainment didn’t met my expectations until last night where everybody was enjoying good, old rock’roll. Cabin was old with very firm bed and worn flat pillows. Decor was very ordinary in need of updating. There was not enough attention from the crew towards people who were sick during the really rough sea. The cabin crew on the other hand was very helpful, polite and friendly. Cruising on Pacific Jewel was my first experience with P & O . Never again on Pacific Jewel! Read Less

I want to make it clear that most people may find this cruise/ship wonderful and may leave thinking that it was the best vacation of their life. This review is about why it feel short of our expectations due to dietary needs, food, the ship and service. This was our fourth cruise. Previously we have been on Regal Princess and the Celebrity Reflection two times. This was our first time on Royal Caribbean and most likely our last. We are married and in our mid 30’s. We booked this trip about 4 months before sailing and got a balcony room on the 6th floor starboard side. I really liked the location of our room, as it was so close to many of the places one needs to go on the ship minus the top decks. The room was beautiful, very well laid out, a huge amount of storage, a very nice size balcony with chairs that came with footrest. The hallway by our room smelled weird, like sawdust, or wood chippings. It was strange and never went away. The ship itself is gorgeous, wonderfully decorated throughout with every possible amenity (some included some not) The Gym was large and very well equipped. The adult’s only solarium is huge, very nice and a quiet escape from the crowds and hoards of screaming children. We didnt like how the ship layout is disconnected from the sea. No place to dine with a view of the ocean. No outside eating at the buffet. No outside venue except for pools, slides and mini golf. Every venue is inside. I missed the ocean on the cruise, oddly enough. This also made me want to spend time in my room so I could be on my balcony. Why three stars? Food: fell short based on our previous expectations. Not just in quality but more so in selection. Dining room menus were unimaginative and boring at lunch and dinner. Most nights we said, “hmmm, I guess this one” it wasn’t exciting. While the food that came out was responsibly good but again nothing that stood out. The same goes with the desserts. We ate all of our meals in the dining room except for three. One dinner we ate at Chops. Service, food and venue were amazing. Nothing more to add. The other two meals regrettably were eating in the Windjammer Café. Windjammer Café was terrible, gross and overcrowded. The buffet on this ship is tiny for the amount of passengers and the size of the ship. It is so overly crowded that one can hardly ever find a seat or one spends 15-20 mins looking for a place to sit. Not only was the venue too small but the food offerings were limited to the point that on the first day, I kept walking around thinking.. is this it? There are no more options The buffet is separated into two sides, one on the port side and one on the starboard side. They are identical in offerings. There are four stations: 1. Sandwiches and Pasta Salads, 2. Pizza, burgers and hotdogs, 3. Salads and veggies 4. One carved meat, Indian food and rice. All stations stayed the same except the carved meat changed. This was the most limited buffet we have seen. The buffet on both the previous ships we have been on not only were larger in size but in selections as well. Plus, the selections changed daily. While we only dined here twice, we came here multiple times to take a look and left due to the selection/crowd. Service: Service in most areas of the ship were what we expected. Friendly, quick and attentive. However, in the main dining room the service at lunch and dinner was horrible and sometimes embarrassing. On multiple days, incorrect food was brought to the table, items were forgotten, drinks were never brought, we waited 45 mins for eggs and we were completely forgotten about twice. Dinner service was always wonderful. While we are realist and understand mistakes happen, these items were a real blunder for us. Especially since the buffet was bad in our opinion that we had to eat in the dining room. We did tactfully let the manager know and it our concerns were addressed with understanding and apologizes. After voicing our concerns, we were regularly checked-up on by the manager at every visit to the dining room. Fellow Passengers: While I never let this effect my vacation too much, on this ship it was hard to ignore the fellow passengers. There were TONS of kids. I was expecting a large number of kids, but there were A TON! Running through the hallways, chasing each other on the stairs, running around the dining room. Luckily, there was the adult only area for the sea days and relaxing. Passengers making political statements: While this matches the political turmoil in the country, we saw many people wearing political statements with their attire. Not only was there a large amount of red hats, there were loud conversations that seemed poorly timed. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, we are all on a ship together and all come with different views. There is no need to publicize your political opinions with tacky clothing and loud conversations during dinner. One in our party is Gluten Free. Gluten Free: This ship fell short of Gluten free options. While they did a good job at pre ordering meals at dinner for the next day, the options in general were meh. The buffet had two options that never changed. Also, there was inconsistent labeling across the ship for all dietary needs. On celebrity, every edible items in all venues are clearly labeled. We spent a large part of every meal navigating the gluten or settling for food that was unappealing. Read Less

My wife & I have done many cruises over the last 10 years,And this has to be the the lower end of all we have done,If this had been our 1st it would have been our last,1 With CMV, 1 with Tui/Marella/Thomson,2 with Cunard & about 16 with P&O,The check in at Southampton was amazingly quick,15 mins from pulling up to cabin is the fastest we have ever experienced,After that it was nothing special,We were experiencing a banging noise outside our cabin,we did contact the pursers desk, the head deck steward did respond very quick, after 30 minutes or so,The desk phoned and said it was a faulty part on the deck above, deck 9 lido, and was required for operational purposes from 07:00 to 23:00 hrs.,They did give some compensation & ear plugs. We were hoping that the faulty part was going to be repaired or replaced at our 1st. stop,Madeira, but no it wasn't and we had to endure this noise for the whole of the Voyage. The there's the entertainment,Or lack of it,There was an illness with 1 of the theatre group,OK I can understand that the show had to be rearranged,so accepted that, but the rest was poor,Pat Patton the the Golden Lion EVERY night, not that good either,A Juggler on the theatre,Come on,we are not 10 year olds,There was 1 night they had a pianist in 3 different bars/venues at the same time,John Martin "comedian" seriously needs new material,He's been on cruise ships for years & is still using the sames gags,Keeps going on about being from Bootle,I thought Liverpool was full of comedians,John not one of them.Entertainments teams didn't mix with the passengers,Cunard like to call us guests,Equinox were good stuck up in the club, but that was empty, with no atmosphere,They did the Golden Lion one night & the Queens room on the last, both were rocking when they were there,I did tick the poor box on the feed back,And the Entertainment Director phoned my cabin & asked if I/We could have a talk about my poor comment,I felt like a naughty child being summonsed to the head teacher,But he was OK,Don't know the average age,We are both in our late 50s.,were very young compered to others,We mention this to the director that Cunard need to move with the times.and start looking after today's generation of cruisers and not who are in the latter years of life,He did seem a little shocked at that comment,But when he thought about it,knew what we meant, they need to rotate the entertainers,We were asked about a cigarette stump/butt on our balcony & we don't smoke, Everything else was great.
