Don't Miss in Sakaiminato
The Adachi Museum of Art is about an hour's drive away and worth the trip. Founded by a local boy who made good, the museum houses works by 20th-century masters of Japanese painting. There is also a magnificent garden that makes use of the Japanese principle of "borrowed scenery," incorporating distant mountains as a design element. The museum also has an annex with contemporary paintings and ceramics, as well as places to eat and shop.
About 45 minutes from Sakaiminato, the 124-acre Tottori-Hanakairo Flower Park is Japan's largest flower garden, with sectors planted in different styles and a conservatory filled with orchids.
