Food and Drink in Lifou

Options for food and drink are limited in Easo, on the island of Lifou. What you will find are local vendors selling fast food, packets of chips and other snack items at the markets. There are also plentiful fresh coconuts to quench your thirst while supporting the local economy.

Beaches in Lifou

Best for a Half-Day Visit: The water at Sandalwood Bay (where you will arrive by tender) is crystal clear and warm. You'll see local children jumping off the pier into the pristine waters which are brimming with sea life. Soft sand and shady spots offer a perfect way to just laze by the beach.

Best for Active Types: Jinek Bay is not to be missed for those who love exploring underwater wonders. The marine pass allows you three-and-a-half hours to discover this unspoilt reserve.

Don't Miss in Lifou

Notre Dame de Lourdes Church: This pretty church was built at the top of a hill in 1898 by Catholic missionaries who landed in Lifou in 1858 to evangelise the people. There is a striking cast-iron statue of the Virgin Mary on top of the beautiful chapel, which can be seen from a distance. From here, you can enjoy unparalleled views of Jinek Bay and Sandalwood Bay (and the cruise ship you've just arrived on).

Jinek Bay: This magnificent marine reserve is a stunning natural wonder. With a diverse range of beautiful coral and thousands of different species of fish, it's the perfect snorkelling spot. Bring your underwater camera and snorkelling gear but take off your reef shoes as they are prohibited due to the damage they can cause the reef. A marine pass needs to be purchased from the ship (about \$20 per person, depending on the cruise line), which will be exchanged for a wristband, giving you access to the bay. To enter the water, there is a sturdy wooden staircase and about two dozen steps. Pool noodles are available free to use while exploring the underwater beauty.

Vanilla Plantation: Visit a vanilla farm of a local family and find out how vanilla pods are grown and harvested. There is also the opportunity for tastings and to purchase souvenirs. On the way to the farm, you will drive through the town of Easo and see some of the local villages.
