Don't Miss in Jekyll Island

National Historic Landmark District: You can still visit the Jekyll Island Club Resort (371 Riverview Drive; 855-535-9547), which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 240-acre site also known as "Millionaire's Village" includes 33 historic structures. Start your exploration at the Jekyll Island Museum (100 Stable Road; 912-635-4036; open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), which offers tours and exhibits and does a great job of introducing you to a bygone era that seemingly still exists on the island.

Georgia Sea Turtle Center: When a sea turtle is found hurt and stranded on an Atlantic coast beach, it has a good chance of ending up here at this animal hospital. The turtle research and rehabilitation facility offers a variety of interactive exhibits and is worth a visit. You can meet the patients, watch them being fed and learn about their natural habitats and the threats to their survival. There is an excellent onsite gift shop too. (214 Stable Road; 912-635-4444; open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas and New Year's Day)

Beaches: For a dreamy setting of soft white sand and mysterious driftwood sculptures dotting the landscape, head to the north end of the island for Driftwood Beach. While locals call this a "tree graveyard," visitors find the visuals to be otherworldly and especially romantic at sunset. Bring a boxed lunch to enjoy at the Clam Creek Picnic Area (Clam Creek Road across from Jekyll Island Campground). If you want to go fishing, you can do so from the nearby Jekyll Island Pier. Alternatively, visit Great Dunes Park (at the end of Ben Fortson Parkway on North Beachview Drive). Here you can access the beach plus a mini-golf course and playground, and it's where you can rent a bike or Segway.

Dolphin Tours, Guided Kayak Trips and Paddleboard Adventures: Captain Phillip's 90-minute narrated dolphin tours are always fun. Catch the boat at Jekyll Wharf Marina in the Historic District (366 North Riverview Drive; 912-635-3152). He also offers kayak and fishing trips plus paddleboard tours and even electric bike rentals.
