Don't Miss in Meissen
Meissen Porcelain: Meissen Porcelain was the first high-quality porcelain to be produced outside of China and Asia. Augustus the Strong, Elector Prince of Saxony and King of Poland, commissioned research to discover the secret of how porcelain was made. In nearby Dresden, experts worked together to successfully create the first European white porcelain in 1708.
Manufacturing was set up at Albrechtsburg Castle in 1710 and moved to its present location in 1864. Tours at the factory, available as an included option on most Elbe River cruises, show artists and craftspeople in the process of creating porcelain pieces in demonstration workshops. A museum chronicles its 300-year history.
