Addo Elephant National Park: No visitor to Port Elizabeth should skip an outing to the nearly 445,000-acre Addo Elephant National Park, set about a 45-minute drive from the port. A malaria-free reserve -- and South Africa's third-largest national park -- visitors on safari here (best experienced via a ranger-guided 4x4 tour) have a chance at viewing any of the Big 5, and are pretty much guaranteed sightings of elephants, with more than 600 that call the reserve home. The park reaches from the Karoo to the coast, where great white sharks and southern right whales (in season) fall into the marine section of the park (boat tours are available), affording it the unique brand of a "Big 7" reserve.
