Don't Miss in Agra

Taj Mahal: Despite the crowds, the Taj Mahal still inspires a feeling of peace and awe when you first spy its familiar pearly dome. The best light is at sunset and that's when everyone else is there too; prepare for a barrage of selfie sticks. Other people notwithstanding, the site is large enough that you'll be able to take that perfect photo for your holiday card (or a shot for Facebook that shows you holding the tomb with your finger like a top). Pictures are not allowed inside the tomb itself and it's almost impossible to get a sense of calm during peak hours. Better to come back at sunrise, when you can view the intricate inlaid marble work and carvings. The light at this time of day is also lovely, particularly when the first rays illuminate the stone.

The Taj Mahal has heavy security and it takes a while to get in, no matter what time you are there. You'll need your passport and a ticket with your name that matches. No food, or even gum, is allowed and bags are limited. The site also has monkeys and dogs roaming around; while they're cute, you'll want to avoid getting too close. (64, Taj Road, Agra-282001; 91-522-230-7037; open from sunrise to sunset, closed on Fridays)

Red Fort: While overwhelmed by its famous neighbor across the river, Agra's Red Fort is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Created by the same Mughal ruler who built the Taj Mahal, the fortified palace has two moats (one was once filled with crocodiles), vast courtyards, inlaid tile and plenty of gorgeous photo ops.
