Review for a Caribbean - Eastern Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

Unfortunately the Niew Amsterdam could not dock at the main port as there were already 3 other cruise liners, therefore our ship was docked 5 miles away from San Juan center. Although the situation was somewhat chaotic at the port in San Juan Holland America did a fantastic job by organizing shuttles to go downtown. The San Juan Highlights city tour took us to different places. Unfortunately ...

The Old City was lovely but due to some curious timing we didn't arrive until 4:30pm and had to be back onboard by 9:00pm. It was New Years Eve and nothing was open so we didn't really feel we got to see much here. ...

Old San juan is nice. This time we went to the farther away fort which is really large a lot to see. The scenery there is just breathtaking. We stopped at Mr Weenies waffles on the way back to the ship. ...

The traffic in San Juan is already a nightmare. The traffic getting to the Pan American pier was horrible. Bumper to bumper with one lane in and out. The terminal had no seating and was very dark. The bathrooms were not clean and the port workers didn’t speak English ( the NCL employees did). Not near Old San Juan. Will need a cab or Uber. ...

One of my favorite ports. Went on my own. Plenty to do. Visited art stores, checked out a few bars, and walked around. Ton of history here to experience and there was also a rain forest excursion as well. ...

I finally visited the Bacardi factory in San Juan. Of all the times I've visited, this was my first time here. We did a group rum tasting, and several new cruise friends joined us. The outside of the factory was interesting, and the rum tasting was excellent. All in all, a good day. The Uber ride back with other cruise family members was inexpensive. I don't recommend taking an Uber alone as it ...

We did a short bus tour - we picked right outside the port - and then walked between the castle and the fort. Walked through downtown (cobblestones, umbrella street), had a pina coloda at the "birthplace of the pina coloda" (it was nasty!) Lots of amazing shopping within walking distance. Heat and humidity was high this late in the year; definitely a factor in walking ability. ...
