In general this was a great cruise. There were a few hiccups so but generally we could not have asked for more. Embarkation: Getting to the ship in San Juan was a nightmare (that really isn't RCCL's fault) and the terminal was also a mess. We had alot of bags and the porters would not help -instead we had to drag everything to a line. Once we got to the counter the agent said she had to keep all UK (and other) passports for the duration of the cruise and when we asked why the person in charge (Chester) basically refused to be helpful and said it was a new rule and that was that. Later during the cruise we received a notice that we could pick up the passport as it was no longer needed by the Spanish authorities but we never got a good explanation. 7 days at sea: perfect. smooth as glass. Not as many activities as we would have expected but that was OK by us. We still had to keep telling ourselves that we didn't have to run to everything. Amazing how quickly 6 days can go. Ports: the Canary Islands were great. The highlight of the trip was our trip to the volcano on Lanzarote. It was hard to get information on what to do on your own so we did the one ship excursion and then just walked around (and did the double-decker buses). definitely need to go back to really see them. But, frankly I enjoyed the days at sea more. Food: excellent, especially in the dining room. I despise cafeterias and so another issue for me was that there is only the Windjammer for lunch on port days. Never any problem getting a lounge chair - but then we were told that the ship was only 2/3 full. Entertainment. Hit or miss. The dance band was quite good - just wish they played in danceable venues more (why is the dance floor in the Imperial Lounge so small?)Lots of people loved most of the shows - they just put me to sleep after a big dinner so avoided them. We had early dinner and there was really nothing to do afterwards until 10:30 - wish there were more dancing during that time. Ice show was OK - just seems like a waste of valuable floor space. The fact that the skaters could not get enough speed on a small ice was very apparent and therefore it lessened the experience. Best dancing was when they covered the rink - just wish it could be a big ballroom like that all the time. Service: we were with 34 other people and the staff seemed to bend over backwards every time we asked for something - most were absolutely great. Surprisingly the "Loyalty" host was extremely rude when we went to book a next cruise. The activities manager (Peter) irritated me a few times (we won't go into it) but that was really it. Drinks: I found the prices high - probably by about 25%. On other cruise lines the wine and drinks are only about twice what you would see ashore - RCCL seemed to be about 3 times the price. We were taken back when wines were removed from the wine package - the wine packages need to be greatly expanded to include more of a variety, especially for a 2-week cruise. They also don't seem to be the good deal they used to be. Disembarkation: very easy. no issues whatsoever. They really need to do something to fix the Internet. it was the #1 complaint I heard on the cruise.
