Before I start, I’m sorry this is a long review!

My sister and I have travelled extensively on European rivers but for various reasons not with Viking until this year. We had planned this trip for several years but illness and a pandemic got in the way. We were looking forward to our river Douro experience on Viking Helgrim. The cruise had been cancelled and rearranged several times, but eventually we settled on the 24th of August, leaving London Gatwick for Porto. As we were uncertain about flights from Glasgow we decided to book an extra night at Gatwick airport on the 23rd before flying out to Porto on the 24th.

Less than 2 weeks before departure we got a phone call to say the flight from Gatwick was cancelled and we were now booked to fly from Heathrow to Lisbon and then to Porto, we were given no alternative, it was either this flight (or as we were told) call customer service and cancel! This doubled our journey and left us with a hotel booking we couldn’t use as we would’ve had to cross London at rush hour in the morning to get to Heathrow, which frankly doesn’t bear thinking about. We spoke to Viking passenger services and to their credit they immediately offered us a taxi to take us to Heathrow on the evening of the 23rd, and we just had to cut our losses and book another hotel at Heathrow.

Cabin Review

We were in cabin on the top deck. The cabin is quite small, but with adequate storage for clothes. The bed was split into twins which are not especially big, although reasonably comfortable.

The shower room isn’t large but has a decent size shower. There were good toiletries which were regularly restocked. Plenty of towels which were changed daily. I never found out how to switch on the mirror light over the sink. There is no make up or shaving mirror.

The balcony is small with 2 chairs and a small table.
