We had a 9 day cruise with Alaskan Dream Cruises in 2013 which was exquisite - a 9 out of10. If we had not had that experience as a comparison we might have rated this current cruise higher. But, unfortunately they have slipped a notch or two. Maybe now a 7 out of 10 - not bad, but not the wonderful experience we had in 2013.
The crew are still very friendly and helpful. The captain still chases whales whenever he sees them. The views are still wonderful. Where it has lost the edge in our opinion, is in the food, the itinerary and the age of the ship. The dinner menu was high end recipes, but the execution was often sub-par. Lunch has been dumbed down typically to a choice between a grilled cheese sandwich or a hamburger. The itinerary did not include any caneries and relied on very small and run down native communities. There were no ATV trips that we enjoyed last time and the only excursion to see bears feeding on salmon cost $550 for the morning for both of us with an outside company. The Alaskan Dream is starting look very tired and for 40 passengers is very cramped.
If you are considering this cruise go ahead because it has many redeeming qualities. But, at $2,000 per day for a couple, the value is no longer so compelling
The two vista cabins have wonderful views, but like most of the cabins, are cramped. The bathroom is an awkward shower toilet combination
