We had planned to sail on Apex in 2020, but we all know what happened. Finally made it on board for this cruise from Athens. I’d like to comment on the COVID protocols and then the cruise itself.
COVID safety was great. All crew were vaccinated. Greater than 95% of passengers (I suspect it was essentially 100%). Everyone had to show proof before being admitted to the testing area where everyone had to test negative for Covid. On board, masks were required in all public spaces unless you were seated sunbathing or consuming food/beverage. Social distancing recommended (no seating if groups of different parties at tables together). At the end of the cruise passengers were tested on board to ensure we were all still negative.
The itinerary of the ship was modified just a week before sailing. Cyprus, where cases were rising, was replaced with Dubrovnik, where case numbers were very low. This change was good for us and a reminder that sometimes you have to be flexible.
Cabin Review
We chose an interior stateroom as it was lower cost and it stays dark in case we want to sleep late. Excellent design to the room. Huge, comfortable bed, plenty of storage worked into the walls and furniture. Bathroom design was very efficient. And our stateroom attendant did an excellent job of keeping it ship shape.
Port Reviews
Athens (Piraeus)
Embarkation port. Athens is a large city that seems dirty and run down in many areas but has so much history that it is well worth visiting. The relatively new Acropolis Museum is great.
Piraeus as a port is a busy place but easy to reach via the metro system. We walked from there to the cruise terminal but I don’t recommend that for most cruisers. It was several km of very hot walking.
