Anxious to get back on a ship we accepted the suggestion to try Crystals' first post pandemic cruise on the Serenity in the Bahamas sailing July 3rd. Clearly this was a mistake on our part as neither they nor the Bahamas were ready for paying customers. Our 7 day cruise wound up having 5 sea days as ports were cancelled due to virus outbreaks on shore. The two islands we did access required a 2 nautical mile tendering in rather choppy conditions. Once ashore no infrastructure or activities except a beach with towel and umbrella, so kindly offered for free from Crystal as an apology for not stopping at previously scheduled ports. Apparently, vaccination rates are very low there and masks are required everywhere. Masks are also still required for all crew members as they have not all had the required time since their vaccinations. Fair enough, but with so many new crew members and their beautiful Eastern European or Pilipino accents muffled by the masks, communication was a challenge at best. By the third day I gave up expecting what I ordered to always arrive and accepted thankfully whatever was put before me. I expect that will improve, but I wonder when they'll be able to go mask less. I love my in room coffee maker, but the coffee pods didn't make the ship, so I had to hunt down a server at 6 am for coffee each day. Also, the sliding glass door to our balcony was scarred by burn marks from welding and they didn't have the option to change the door for our cruise. It was a perfect midship Penthouse suite, and they offered a replacement, literally at the bow, which my mobility challenged senior citizen legs could not do. Oh how we enjoyed our many sea days looking through the scarred glass. Crystal offered us a bouquet of flowers in our cabin instead. Bless there hearts. These were a few of the irritating issues and as a seasoned cruiser I'm willing to overlook. As expected , the food, entertainment and guest lecturers were superb as was the general housekeeping and maintenance. I am booked on Crystal again, but wanted to share our recent experience in case others are considering this itinerary. The one event that really galled me was the final full day of the cruise, which had always been a scheduled sea day. The Captain announced we would stop at Freeport for a 2 hour fueling operation and could not disembark. Clearly the tourist area there was not ready for us anyway, but the 2 hour fueling took 10 hours, so our entire "Sea" day was docked between tug boats and fuel trucks and there was zero entertainment or organized activities to enjoy. The captain did apologize for this as well, which seemed an appropriate way to end the cruise.
