We had a wonderful Viking River Cruise on the Danube and were curious about their ocean cruises. In particular, the Viking River service and logistics were outstanding. The food was fine but not outstanding. The tours were well organized. The cost of optional tours was reasonable. ...Viking Ocean does not disappoint. The Sun is a lovely ship with generous public spaces. The service was outstanding. The food was really good consistently. The chefs and staff did special meals around the pool at noon on several days. The Italian restaurant was outstanding! Often the cafe menu was better than the restaurant menu in terms of special offerings, but the main restaurant was our go-to choice for dinner--menu variety, nice portions, excellent service, lovely setting. The included wines and beers were quite good. ...The cabin was very nice as was the bathroom. TV service and the Internet were generally reliable even at sea in the North Atlantic. Shipboard TV programming was okay but not extensive. Given the weather, we did not use the veranda but it would be nice to use in warmer climates. The laundry room was nice to have for those who pack lightly. The spa was great to have to refresh after a day of touring. The main jacuzzi-type pool became a daily destination before dinner. Entertainment was quite good for a small ship. Our cruise director was the best one we ever had on any line. We qualified for free air which helped with the costs. Even with that discount, the cruise was our most expensive vacation ever. Except for the weather, the cruise was our favorite ocean cruise. We'd do Viking again and again if we can find destinations that appeal.

Port Reviews

Reykjavik

The tour included both bus and walking. The guide was good. It gave us a nice introduction to the city.

Quebec City

Unfortunately, 5 large cruise ships were in port along with 20K people conducting an environmental protest that day, so our tour bus got trapped in traffic and had to detour to avoid the protest. So, we got off and walked the historic district, had a lovely lunch at a popular spot, and decided, unfortunately, to returnm to the ship ealry. Quebec could not handle the massive crowds in town that day.
