We chose this cruise because it offered a chance to visit Russia and tour the Hermitage Museum. The ports of call were all very interesting and different. Some of the ports were former communist bloc cities, therefore eye opening as to their progress since the fall of Communism. The panoramic bus tours are not the best way to get a flavor of the ports but at least gave an overview of the destination. All the tour guides were very knowledgeable, fluent in English and most told anecdotes about their lives under communist rule. The staff aboard the Viking Sun was as exceptional as we had been told by previous travelers. Within two days we were recognized by name. The meal selections and dining rooms were excellent quality. The specialty restaurants were never completely full when we dined which allowed the staff and kitchen to keep up without rushing or delaying meals. We never felt crowded by the presence of the 900+ passengers thanks to the beautiful common areas which were spread around the ship allowing the guests to find a good view and a quiet space. The Explorer Lounge was a well kept secret since it was never crowded and offered great views from the front of the ship. The guest lecturers gave informative talks which were limited to 50 minutes. Our cruise started in Bergen, Norway and ended in Stockholm, Sweden. We flew in to Oslo a few days early and had time to explore that city as well as recover from jet lag. From there we did the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour on our own rather than join a group. I would highly recommend that you arrange for that, either on your own or take one of the organized tours. We stayed extra days in Stockholm on our own at the end of the trip to have more time for sightseeing..

Cabin Review

This cabin is one of four deluxe veranda cabins located on deck 8 of the Viking Sun. To us it was the best location on the ship in that it was convenient to the lounges on decks 7 and 8, to the elevator and to the World Cafe. The cabin was a reasonable size for two people and had generous drawer and closet space. The space was well planned to utilize it well without seeming too crowded.. The bathroom shower was small, but workable and the heated floor was a welcome amenity. The veranda which had two comfortable chairs and a small table was very adequate for two people. There was a bit of privacy from adjacent cabins with dividers between each veranda. The only down side of this cabin is that it is right below the shuffleboard deck and was at times noisy from the puck hitting the sides. However, we have reserved the same cabin number for a future cruise.
