I chose this cruise for several reasons: I wanted a transatlantic cruise, as I love the ocean and my father had been in the Navy in WWII; because of the reputation of Viking as geared toward thinking and reflective travelers; and the fact that it limits the size and population of its guests; and a 3 day promotion that included airfare and a reduction of the surcharge for a solo traveler.

Having never cruised before, I was anxious about my luggage, and so sent it via Luggage Forward. That worked so well! It was taken directly to the cabin for me. The ship was immaculate, inviting in its various spaces, and the spa facilities absolutely wonderful. I was going to have my birthday on this trip, something I mentioned to the booking agent and then again to the cruise director -- I was sent a cake and champagne, and the assistant cruise director joined me for dinner. It was delightful. I had a wonderful time! The cabin was great -- a great terrace, bathroom floors that were heated and spotless, reasonably comfortable bed and good chairs and desk. I never encountered a problem with my internet connection and the in room ability to watch any of the offered lectures at another time was a bonus for me. There were a large variety of activities and entertainment offered, and I enjoyed them very much, especially after meeting some friendly persons to attend shows with and share some of my meals with them and others. The presence of a resident historian and informative lectures was a big plus, and they were very accessible too. The service was superb -- I can't say enough about it, especially the everyday service on the floor. Shore excursions were generally good; some better than others, although some of that had to do with the destinations at which we arrived, and that I chose the included ones which were more bus tourist type than I would usually choose. Disembarkation went smoothly, and I stayed for several days in Barcelona afterwards, as arranged with Viking air. I loved the ship. I bought a small model as a memento. I am hoping my upcoming "birthday" cruise this year is just as good -- it will be on a different ship.
