This was our first Viking cruise and we took the West Indies Explorer on the Viking Sea. We had been watching the Viking Ocean itineraries since the cruise line started in 2015 and thought it looked like a cruise line to meet all our needs. Well, that was certainly correct. We are experienced cruisers on 8 different cruise lines, both ocean and river. This was our favorite cruise. There were many things to like- the staff, the food, the itinerary and the ports but the best thing was the Viking Sea itself. It is a beautiful ship with all the nooks and crannies you could possibly want to read or have a quiet conversation. There is beauty all around and books galore, including many antique and research selections. The artwork is stunning. Having complimentary use of the Nordic Spa was a wonderful amenity and the hot-cold aspect to it was exhilarating. When you see the oak bucket with the cord coming out of it, pull that cord! It'll make your day. Our Penthouse Veranda 6087 was very large and accommodating. The included excursions were quite well done but if Viking had a weakness, it was their QuietVoxx system which worked poorly or was unusable by guides in almost all of our excursions that used the device. The guides undoubtably had a lot to say, and we didn't hear much of it, unfortunately.

It was a wonderful experience. You hear about the exceptional Viking staff and it is really true. They are quick to learn your name and your personality. They are friendly and relaxed in each setting you encounter them. Many thanks to the staff of the Viking Sea and to Viking for creating such a perfect ship and experience. We will be back.

Cabin Review

The Penthouse Veranda cabin was larger than the Veranda cabins, with a large comfortable sofa and chair, creating a separate area from the bed. The balcony was also larger which made for great viewing and breakfasts. There was an added benefit to this cabin as we realized there is a floor extending above you from the 7th floor buffet area which protects you from the rain, even when cruising. This was a real surprise to us. The bathroom is a marvel, heated floors and a fogless mirrors system which also seems to create excellent ventilation in the room. The wet bar had 4 bottles of alcohol, tonic and sodas with a few snacks. It was replenished daily or when you asked for something. There were two large drawers in the bathroom to securely put all your belongings. The shower was well designed and more than ample. There was rarely a wet floor after showering. There are plenty of outlets all around with USB ports on both bedside stands. The lighting is extensive and well thought out. We had a night or two when we felt the waves but it did not interfere with dining or activities. The room was kept spotless, and I mean spotless, by our stewards.
