Ship from the port at Grand Cayman.

This is only my second cruise, the first was over twenty years ago, and my wife's first. We chose a cruise because of the relatively low cost and the ports of call which included some of our favorite places; Cozumel, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman.

We boarded the ship in Galveston and other than a hickup with our luggage (don't leave the port parking bus before you literally hand over every piece of luggage to the porter), we got in the meandering long line of people waiting to get checked aboard. The process was actually fairly quick and easy but there were over 3000 people trying to get on at approximately the same time. The check-in process probably took about an hour from starting in line until we got into our room.

First of all, let me say the ship is absolutely beautiful. I had read several reviews stating the ship is older and starting to show wear. I think not being a regular cruiser, I have less expectation than those who cruise a lot. I looked it up, the Liberty of the Seas cost 800 million dollars to construct. There are some areas of the ship were you can see a little fraying around the edges, but the architecture, design, and decor were top notch. I wasn't expecting the ship to contain and display so many varied types of art. There are sculptures, paintings, photos, and metalwork every where you look and in some places you don't even see until the third or fourth day. The Royal Promenade is the main thoroughfare of through the center of the ship. There are shops, restaurants, bars, and people...so many people sometimes.

Cabin Review

Promenade View Interior

The cabin was small, as expected, but well appointed and there was plenty of room to conveniently store everything we brought (and we brought waaaayyy too much). We just had to remember that along with a view we got of the Royal Promenade, if the curtain was open, the Royal Promenade gets to view you back. There are nooks and crannies in every part of the cabin; There was room to store a dozen pairs of shoes over the closet, there were drawers and under bed storage, the bathroom successfully held all of mine and my wife's grooming products. The only negative was the room fridge never got anything under 68 degrees. It had a label stating it only cools to 55 but it never quite made it there.

Port Reviews

Galveston

Galveston was the getting on and off point only for us. We parked at Port Parking and took a shuttle to the terminal. Remember to hand each of your bags to the porter. We didn't and assumed they would take the rest. They didn't so we had to get out of line, go back to the drop off point and pick up our bags and hand them to a porter. If someone in line hadn't told us, our luggage would have been left behind.
