I'm not really much of a cruise guy, but as cruises go, the Celebrity Cruise we were on was pretty good. When I travel, especially overseas, I prefer to go directly there and stay there for a week or more, exploring. Stopping for 4 to 6 hours in a port just doesn't satisfy my curiosity about a new place. And I never shop at Diamonds International or any of those other jewelry shops that are found in every port. If the ship recommends a place to eat or drink, I know that's NOT where I want to spend my time. ;-)
I took this cruise because it was essentially free, a gift from MGM casino (where we like to play the slots). All we had to pay were the port fees and gratuities (and we had enough frequent flyer miles for free Delta airfare to Lauderdale).
Actually, we made a little money on this cruise -- we were in the casino each night and both of us were pretty lucky.

San Juan
We honeymooned in San Juan 37 years ago so we were looking forward to this stop. But with only a few hours in port, we settled on just getting a very wonderful dinner at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the beach.
St. Thomas
None of the excursions offered appealed to us. (In part, that's because my mobility issues prevented me from doing some of the more appealing excursions like scuba diving or hiking.) So we just picked out a few historic or cultural sites that were less likely to be overrun by fellow shipmates and pretty much had them all to ourselves.
Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)
We flew into Ft. Lauderdale a day early, had a delightful meal at the Casablanca Cafe and spent a restful night by the hotel pool.
Tortola
Here we toured a botanical gardens, still recovering from hurricane Maria damage. But that gave us an opportunity to talk to the garden staff, to learn about the history of the gardens (and the lizards and chickens that roamed the grounds). Afterward, we went shopping and enjoyed lunch (both away from the tourist areas).
