A Western Caribbean cruise out of Miami which left Miami on its coldest day in 5 years - it should have been an indicator. We started with two days of cold, rainy and windy weather but that didn't stop us being entertained and having fun. We were unable to make our scheduled stop at Grand Cayman as it was unsafe for the tenders to take us to port - this was disappointing as we were really looking forward to visiting Hell. Unfortunately for Carnival, 20 sun loungers were lost over the edge of the ship.

Once we'd passed through our bad weather things improved. Our stops at Roatan, Belize and Cozumel were lovely and the weather was gorgeous.

It was certainly a cruise for Carnival to grab back some of our winnings - the coldest craps table on record must have been the award that week. Still, between Maria, Sushi, Ignatius, Brian and Simon and casino supervisor Errol, our dealers still provided great entertainment and service.

Cabin Review

Balcony

Cabin 8F

This is a standard Carnival balcony offering. We had twin beds set up and enjoyed the fact that the balcony had an open top, allowing us to enjoy the stars in the evening without too much light polution from the deck above.

Carnival balconies give two chairs which recline and a small side table. The glass front goes almost to the floor, giving great viewing area.

The beds each have side tables with small cupboards. The cabin has plenty of storage and we had lots of coathangers - two ladies and no complaints on storage.

The bath mat seems to have returned after a short absence in November/December 2018 which I appreciated - never could understand why they took it away when it just meant putting down a hand towel instead.

I do wonder about opting for evening cleaning as our steward came knocking at the door twice during our cruise when we had not left for dinner. I was a little surprised to learn from my friend that they are now allowed into cabins when you are there - she was a little unwell and took a seat on the balcony whilst our cabin was quickly refreshed.

All in all, these cabins are perfect for two people but I'm not sure I'd want to try any more people in them.

Port Reviews

Miami

Enjoyed a day down in South Beach which we would have liked to have longer but our luggage didn't make it with us so we had to return to our hotel to await its return (which it did) or prepare to go emergency shopping.

Roatan

We took a local taxi to the downtown area but were wholly disappointed with our experience - or should I say, we had a thorough reminder of our privilege in this life. We hardly saw any other tourists and wish more would take the time to take a short ride there. Pay just US$2 per person which is the locals rate - and a bargain.

Cozumel

This was our second visit to Cozumel and it was a very warm day so we didn't manage the walk all the way to the downtown area (purported to be 6 miles but I'm not quite convinced about that). There's a little section of buildings a good walk down which include Blue Angel Resort and its restaurant; stop here for refreshments and, if you're not up to walking all the way to downtown, return to the cruise port and its surrounding shopping areas.

Belize City

A great opportunity to stretch your legs. Come out of the cruise port and turn right and take a walk along to the Belize sign for a photo opportunity - there's also a cafe opposite where you can support the local economy and the local park.

Next, carry along the promenade to the Bliss Lighthouse for a little local history. The cross over and walk through Fort George Memorial Park and you will find the small artisan market where you can see craftsmen at work and purchase goods directly from the maker (or some mass-produced items for those a little less creative). Once you come out of the market, head back towards the port and cross through and over the bridge to hit up downtown and see some of the colonial architecture of the city.

One thing IS for sure, don't listen to the passengers telling you it's unsafe; we were two ladies, mature in age, who enjoyed a good walk without too much hassle (generally just around the port area with the usual pushing of taxis and tours). Take the time to see this city at your own pace and certainly without any safety concerns.
