My daughter and I said yes when Royal offered us a “free” cruise and saw it had a stop in Cuba. I mean who doesn’t want to go to Cuba? Well folks, I’ll share about Cuba saving you money to find out it’s sad...really sad. Socialism and Communism just does not work. Havana is truly falling apart. We took part of Royal’s nine hour tour so we got a pretty good idea about the area. I asked the tour guide why the “living” lived in horrible conditions, maintained by the State, and the cemetery was just down right beautiful and well kept. She replied: “It’s good to be dead.” Sums of Cuba.

If you decide to take a Royal tour here is what to expect. You will meet as a group to head off the boat first (a definite plus) but once thru security no one tells you what to do or expect. It’s not hard going thru the security at Cuba but they will take a picture of you. After security don’t stand in the long line you see first to get your money exchanged. Right beside that line are stairs. Take those stairs down a flight and there’s cashiers waiting to exchange your money. Now remember Cuba charges the American dollar ten percent more than any other currency. Add that to the normal three percent and you deduct 13% right off the top. Treat Cuban money as you do the American dollar. It’s that similar, so no confusion when buying stuff.

Then back up stairs, go right and look for the bus number of your group. Our nine hour tour was by bus for six or so hours then you can choose to get off at the ship or go on a walking tour with the guide. We got off at the ship. The tour took us all around and we found our guide interesting but a bit closed mouth as all tourism is owned by the government. We did find out the usual monthly pay for government workers is around $500. We had lunch at one of the very few restaurants privately owned. Total American looking place which surprised us all. We had cigars and rum at a really neat pace. Our bus was comfortable and had AC. We were surprised at how sad everyone seemed to be. Apparently, it’s hard for someone in Cuba to get a Visa as everyone in Cuba is considered a “flight risk.” The tour gave out bottle water but we found our couple extra from the ship needed.

Ocean View

Cabin 2N

8050 is sold as a partially blocked ocean view room. We saw the bottom of the lifeboat from our widow but still offered a nice view of the ocean. It’s small but very doable for two people. Bed is hard so asked for some padding. Bring your own shampoo, conditioner and soap. AC worked great. Quiet room and nicely located.
