Always wanted to try a river cruise. Chose Viking over other cruise lines primarily because of reputation. It also resulted in us getting very good upgraded airfare at a reasonable cost. Highly recommend the Premium Economy on Lufthansa if you require additional legroom.
The service on board was excellent. The food choices were great even for those who are less adventurous when it comes to regional cuisine. The left side of the menu offers the same choices every day which are typical American food while the right side typically has local cuisine. The waitstaff was always around and you basically were never in want of anything including free beer and wine at lunch and dinner.
The best part regarding the river cruise was the location of the docking relative to the cities visited. We took an included tour of the daily city which usually lasted about 2 hours. It gave you a real lay of the land and allowed you to decide f you wanted to return to the ship or stay in the city to sight see since it was almost always within walking distance.
The French Balcony cabins were small but in very good condition. The cleanliness was superior and we typically met with our attendant every morning as we went to breakfast. The room was usually cleaned and made up before we returned from breakfast. Internet access was fine. We only remember one short period of time when it was not available.
The bed was turned down in the evening. Free bottled water was always available for your in-room refrigerator.
