We chose the Viking Homelands itinerary because it began in Stockholm, which allowed us to spend a week pre-cruise to visit Gotland where my husband’s grandmother was born. We also spent three nights in Stockholm prior to embarkation. Our flights and the pre-cruise adventure were all planned independently. We had no problem using Super Shuttle from the airport in to Stockholm. We stayed at the Hotel Esplanade in Stockholm. Excellent location within walking distance of the Vasa Museum, Gamla Stan, and many great restaurants. Embarkation was very smooth and quick. Our cabin (cat DV6) was spacious, with plenty of storage area. The bathroom was particularly spacious and had a heated floor! We thoroughly enjoyed all of the dining options onboard. We had 2 dinners in the Italian-themed Manfredi’s and 4 nights in the Chef’s Table (set menu with wine pairings). Food at both venues was delicious! The Chef’s Table is a bit more adventuresome - be sure to check the menu before making a reservation as there are no choices! The Main Dining room and the buffet offerings in the World Cafe were all excellent.We enjoyed eating on the Aquavit Terrace for breakfasts and lunches. Hamburgers at the Pool Grill were a treat, as were the waffles with strawberries and cream in Mamsen’s! Be sure to try the Thalassotherapy Pool in the spa, as well as the snow room and the hot tub. We found the enrichment lectures on board to be very informative. Entertainment was average. We did enjoy the well attended trivia events and the pianist and string trio who played in the Atrium. Each port offered an included shore excursion. These were usually guided walking tours to acquaint you with the port. There was a good variety of additional excursions to choose from for additional cost. Note that Viking allows guests to pre-book excursions and dining reservations based on your cabin category. The suites get to choose first, then the Penthouse Veranda, followed by Deluxe Verandas, and finally the Veranda category. The later you get to choose, the less likely you have your choice of tour time. Reservations at Manfredi’s and the Chef’s Table were relatively easy to make on board the ship. We traveled with a group and planned a group dinner in the private dining room in the Chef’s Table (seats 14) for one night!
