We chose this cruise as a family to visit Papua New Guinea where my father served in WW2 and my husband spent his childhood. We took our daughter and grandson to visit this town and experience our family history. When we couldn't leave Brisbane on time and the Captain knew he could not make up the time to get to PNG on time, we should have been bused to Fisherman Island as other P&O cruise ships do regularly. Why was Rabaul the port cancelled? An officer on board told us that it had to be Alotau or Rabaul and most people wanted to see Alotau. I certainly wasn't asked and everyone we spoke to agree, they wanted to see Rabaul, so where did this consensus of opinion arise. We arrived in Alotau a day early because they were preparing for their festival the next day and locals were not expecting us. I can understand medical emergencies then delaying us twice more and missing a further port, despite us sitting within swimming distance of the island for half a day. Overall, a disastrous cruise, staff were rude in the duty free sales section, not upholding advertised specials. Entertainment below par, 1 or 2 acts of national standard but these performers were not seen again, all in-house performers (no doubt cheap). Food was the worst I have have ever experienced in years of cruising. Cost cutting by P&O has denigrated their cruise lines across all aspects and we will never travel with P&O Australia again. Please don't confuse this with British P&O, they are excellent.
