This was our 20th cruise, but first with Celebrity. I imagined Celebrity as similar to Princess (our favorite line) and HAL. Celebrity did not meet those expectations on this cruise. The ship itself is a nice, smaller ship. Not elegant, and certainly no bells and whistles. Our oceanview cabin was similarly undistinguished and fairly small. The food was consistently very good, but portions were small and the main problem was little variety and no imagination. We never had a "wow" meal. There was not much emphasis on healthy food, nor a lot of high-end ingredients (lobster, crab, real chocolate, pine nuts, premium fruits like strawberries, blueberries, mango, etc.) It seemed like there were bean-counters consciously trying to keep food costs down. The sides were consistently potatoes and string beans. I mean just about every night. I was surprised that there was little ethnic food, other than regular Indian food (which was good) and Mexican food at the buffet while in Cozumel (which was bad). Not a single Chinese stir fry or Thai, Greek, Middle Eastern, Italian, etc. The breakfast was the same thing every day. The lunch was also very similar day to day. Dinners were uninspired. The service was generally good, but not really attentive, and certainly not the premium service I expected. For example, it was rare to see someone coming around in the buffet with drinks. It was often hard to find someone to ask a question to. If I needed silverware (not provided on the tables in the buffet) and someone was stacking the rolled up napkins and silverware, I had to reach over them to get a set. Never did anyone acknowledge me or stop to hand me a set. On Princess I would have been handed that silverware, and someone would have brought me a drink, probably someone who recognized me and knew what I liked to drink. That is premium service and that was sorely lacking on this ship. The entertainment staff (cruise director Luigi et al) I thought did a good job but there just were not a lot of activities on board. It was more like HAL with not much to do during the sea days. The musicians were generally good, but there were not a lot of them, and it was hard to find live music. The Passion Duo (guitar and singer) were particularly good, The orchestra was excellent but should have had more opportunities to play. The production staff (singers and dancers) were also excellent, but only did one show: iBroadway, which was very entertaining. They did iBroadway on the last night of the cruise, leaving everyone wondering where these people were hiding the whole cruise. There were two comedians who did the typical cruise ship routines. They had a singer/impressionist, Travis Turpin, who I thought did a really entertaining and somewhat unique show. But again there was just not enough entertainment. Everything just felt really low end, like a budget cruise line with budget food and budget entertainment. On the last day the toilets stopped working. It was a fitting end to a pretty crappy cruise. We will be sticking with Princess, and to a lesser extent HAL and RCL, unless we get a great deal on Celebrity that is priced like the low-end line Celebrity has apparently become. Then we will set our expectations really low.
