Holland America Line - Nieuw Amsterdam Sept-Oct 2018

I thought to myself what a great way to arrive in San Diego from Vancouver for those who don't care to fly, and quite reasonable especially if your prime goal was just transportation with no frills attached.

I had high expectations for this 4 day repositioning cruise which continued on from San Diego to Ft. Lauderdale which for some I believe was a total of 23 days. My high expectations were due to this ship being newly refurbished in 2017 and we've sailed on HAL before many years ago and it was by far at the top of our list for favorites. I recall the food being exceptional ( before the days of specialty restaurants) and the entertainment stellar. So how did it fare this time around?...

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom

Cabin VE

Cabin 8114- This was an upgrade from what we paid. We purchased a deluxe ocean view balcony guaranteed cabin. We were well aware of the risks of choosing a guaranteed category, but the ship was almost sold out and a least we knew we were getting a balcony with a deluxe ocean view. This balcony cabin was the nicest we've been on so far. It was spacious, the balcony had more depth than some cabins decks beneath us and the location was good. There were no inside cabins across from us, we were close to a group of elevators and beneath the Lido Buffet so just a jolt up the stairs if we needed to grab a little something. The downside of being below the Lido Deck is usually the noise of chairs being shuffled around and other movement from above. This is the pitfall of a guaranteed cabin! However I'm happy to say that this was not an issue with us. Yes we heard 'chair noise' occasionally and staff scuffling food carts about but we weren't in our cabin for most of the day and this was minimal overnight.

Vancouver

I live in Vancouver, there’s an endless list of things to do and places to visit like Stanley Park. Right on the pier there’s an educational, fun ride “Fly Over Canada” which is similar to the “Soarin” adventure ride in Disneyland.
