We have been thinking about a river cruise since retirement 5 years ago. Long time friends called and asked if we wanted to join them on Avalon Visionary for the Rhine and Moselle. So glad we did. It was our first cruise.

The cruise was a total delight. Great scenery, comfortable, wonderful food. The entertainment was well chosen, including the on-board piano player. Service both in the cabin and in the restaurant was always efficient and friendly. The ship was kept spotless. Ports were well chosen and docking convenient to interesting sights. Day tours on shore were interesting with English speaking local guides. Joust, the cruise director, was always informative and herded the "cats" well in a friendly manner.

Our friends have an extensive wine collection and brought wine for dinners each night. The staff didn't mind a bit and were very accommodating with extra glasses.

Cabin Review

Outside Stateroom with Window

Cabin E

A little tight, but fine for sleeping and bathing. We didn't stay in the room much other than that. We chose the lower cost deck and used the savings to do more optional excursions and stay extra days in Zurich and Amsterdam.

Port Reviews

Zurich

Mt. Pilatus excursion was great. Views, tram, and cog railway all fantastic.

Hotel Movenpick very comfortable. Hotel restaurant with lots of Movenpick ice cream treats was a good value.

Strasbourg

Fairly long bus ride with lots of curves...Not worth the time once you got to the spot.

Amsterdam

Ok, but the day after the Gay Pride parade the city was a total mess with lots of garbage in the canals.

Amsterdam

Interesting and informative. Learned about diamonds and saw a selection of sizes and quality.

Koblenz

Pretty standard tour of the old part of town...Informative guide. Also took the cable cars across the Rhine and up to the fort.

Bernkastel-Kues

Seeing the Doktor vineyard was an unexpected treat...I'd read about it and had wine from it over the years. The town was cute. The wine museum in Kues was the best wine shop I have ever seen -- 140 wines for tasting, not counting the special wines behind the counter that were also available for tasting.
