This was a birthday celebration for my daughter. My second cruise to Alaska, first time on HAL; her first cruise experience ever. Embarkation was fast and efficient. Probably the quickest encountered. We arrived around 1pm, and was surprised to be on board and have immediate access to stateroom in under an hour. (which was a bonus not having to lug the carry on around with you to lunch or explore the ship)

Late May is early in the season and quite unpredictable weather wise. Our "at sea" days were rainy, cold and windy. As long as you plan ahead and pack clothing to layer as needed it is not a major issue. We were extremely fortunate, and the weather cooperated in all of our ports. Glacier Bay was magnificent and did not disappoint. We had a full hour at the famed Marjerie glacier. Juneau was the only port where it was drizzling on arrival, but let up to allow enjoyment of the sights and excursions.

Since Alaska itineraries are more about the scenery and ports, we noticed that while there were activities on board, these are not to the same extent experienced on other itineraries. Did not experience much interaction with the cruise director at all. The ships main stage entertainment was not as good as we have seen on other lines, but the ship does offer a wide ranging assortment of venues ranging from classical, to Billboard hits and blues. In addition, the headline acts for the sailing, illusionist Joseph Réohm, and comedian David Crowe were exceptional.

Cabin Review

Large Outside Stateroom (fully obstructed views)

Cabin HH

After researching, decided to try an obstructed oceanview stateroom. What a pleasant surprise and great value it was! The stateroom had a floor to ceiliing window opening to yes, a view of the lifeboat outside... but here was the surprise- we were able to see right through that lifeboat and get an idea of what the weather was, or whether we were already in port, etc. The bath was not cramped at all and included a bathtub. Storage was ample; in fact we did not even utilize it all. Our cabin stewards were effecient and unobtrusive, yet there to handle requests when needed. In fact, housekeeping on board was amazing... never saw or experienced any carts or service items (with the exception of an occassional vacuum cleaner during the entire cruise, and that included disembarkation!)

Port Reviews

Seattle

Spent the day touring on our own, which included Pikes Market and the Pop Culture Museuam as well as the area around the Space Needle (which is currently undergoing rennovations). A "Duck Tour" allowed us to see other notable Seattle area sites, and was fun and entertaining.

Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay was our main objective in selecting this itinerary, as only two ships are allowed each day into the bay. Our day was everything we hoped for and more... During our hour long stop to observe the spectacular Margerie glacier, we were fortunate to witness not one, but two significant calvings... impressive to say the least. However, even more impressive was sighting not one, but a total of 5 brown bears! (which included a rare occurrance of seeing a mother with three cubs!)
