We choose this cruise for the itinerary. We were on the 12 day of a 19 day sailing. You do not see it available often. Sailing from Rome, we had several ports in Spain, Gibraltar, Portugal, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. It gave us a chance to really see different areas of Europe and to see were we would like to come back for a longer visit. We have sailed Holland America before, but never on the Koningsdam. It is a newer ship and the public areas, bars, restaurants were decorated very nicely with interesting artwork. We had excellent service every time we visited the Explorations Cafe. Cruise staff was great and addressed all of our needs. For entertainment we enjoyed the BB King venue. The entertainment in the main theater is hit or miss, but we find that to be the case on all cruises. We prefer the guest entertainers over the ships singers and dancers. We did like the ports visited, and there was a variety of shore excursions to choose from. We booked half through the ship, and the other days set off on our own. We would definitely do this itinerary again. We had booked it with an air package which made it an excellent value.

Cabin Review

Large Interior Spa Stateroom

Cabin IQ

After 20 plus cruises, this was our first time in an inside cabin. We booked it because the value was too good to pass up. We were a little skeptical having a inside cabin for a 12 night cruise, but it turns out we did not miss a window or balcony. Our cabin was just steps from the deck overlooking the pool, so we could be outside in seconds. It may be a bit too noisy for some (but it did not bother us), as the cabin is directly behind the large movie screen at the pool and there are movies every night. Also the hallway was a little noisy with guests making their way out to the deck and the slamming of the door. Overall it was a great cabin.

Port Reviews

Valencia

We took a cycling tour we booked on our own. Had an excellent day.

Seville

Did not take a tour, but choose to walk around the city of Cadiz on our own.

Vigo

Took the bus shuttle to Santiago where we explored on our own. Lovely city.

Cherbourg

Booked the D-Day tour through the ship. Would have liked to have had more time to visit the American Cemetery.

Brugge (Bruges)

We took a shuttle bus that we booked independently to Brugge. A very charming city. Highlight of the cruise.

Cartagena (Spain)

Loved the port. Did not book any excursions, but choose to walk around the city on our own.

Amsterdam

Since we had a flight later in the day, we made our own arrangements to drop our bags at the airport and do some sightseeing on our own. Easy to get around with the public transport. Did not find the city as inviting as the other ports.
