The Koningsdam in my opinion was "oversold" a bit by Holland America's flowery marketing materials. Having sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam a few times, I expected the Koningsdam to be a major step up based on HA's glowing description but other than a few technical nuances, such was not the case. In fact, I felt a few features were a step backwards. Let's start with the main stage theater, designed for in-the-round events with permanent seating that extends 2/3's of the way around the circular (extended) stage (which can be removed for non in-the-round presentations). The Nieuw Amsterdam's theater was much more impressive in design and elegance. The one on Koningsdam reminded me more of a theater at a junior college. Yes, there are new graphic and audio systems but the look is plain and uninspiring. The first several rows of seats are all ground level so if you get stuck behind anyone taller than 5'8" you may have viewing issues on the lower level. The sound was fine, the visuals were interesting, and on our trip the acts were "OK."

What we really enjoyed was the upscale dining. Pinnacle, Sel de Mer, Tamarind, and even Canaletto were all superb dining experiences, among the best we've had anywhere. Impeccable service and great food, well presented and well timed. Five Stars! Well worth the extra money (just skip buying on-board jewelry or a casino night) and highly recommended.

We had a forward Verandah stateroom with a double-sized patio area (albeit with solid steel instead of glass for viewing) but that was not an issue and we enjoyed the view from our deck chairs or leaning on the rail. The extra room was nice. What was not nice is the ridiculous, child-size toilet installed at such an angle that even my 5' tall wife complained about her knees hitting the shower door. Huge oversight especially when you consider the full size shower is great. Prepare for a gymnastic move every time you need to sit there.

Cabin Review

Verandah Stateroom

Cabin VF

Stupidly small toilet, jams you right up against the shower. Great full size shower though. Good storage room, large porch on our cabin. Clean, modern, well appointed. But my God, who approved that mini-toilet and jammed it into an unacceptably small space? It was uncomfortable even for my 5' tall wife and I'm over 6' so do the math. Other than that, the cabin is good.

Port Reviews

St. Kitts (Port Zante)

We just did the shopping area which was typical (with slightly overaggressive tour vendors) so not much to report. Probably good for water activities.

Martinique

We did our own walking tour of the city and had lunch in a hole in the wall non-tourist place. They speak FRENCH and not much English and almost every place wants Euros not dollars, but there are plenty of ATMs where you can get 20 or 40 Euros as needed. Very interesting sites to see, including the fort and the historic library.
