Our most recent trip on Oasis of the Seas was in every way average, and in some ways poor. I have taken 12 cruises total, 4 Holland America, 5 Disney and 3 Royal Caribbean (Navigator, Allure and now Oasis). We were originally booked on the Allure (Western Caribbean), set to depart on the day Hurricane Irma ripped through South Florida. Given our options from RCCL, we chose to re-book later in September on Oasis. The re-booking process what somewhat of a nightmare as getting RCCL to deliver on the terms they promised when cancelling Allure took multiple, lengthy phone calls. Despite these challenges, we continued to look forward to sailing on a new ship (for us). Having sailed on Allure previously, we new much of what to expect.

As it turns out, the differences between Allure and Oasis are dramatic, and not in a positive way for Oasis.

Overall impressions - corporate cost cutting is evident with Oasis (with it being 4 years since we sailed on Allure, it's tough to say whether this cost cutting extends to the rest of the fleet. However, from our perspective on Oasis, it is obvious). Dinner food in the main dining room is just shy of poor. Not even on par with moderate resort banquet food. one night our table found hair in their salad, and plastic (PLASTIC!) in their soup. Service felt rushed and confused every single night we ate in the main dining room with night #6 taking over an hour between ordering to appetizer. To add to this, they completely misinterpreted a food allergy for my nephew, and after so boldly vocalizing how they created a dish just for him - come to find out, it had the exact ingredient he was allergic to. Service members in the Main Dining room were pleasant, but execution of said service overall was a miss.

Cabin Review

Superior Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony

Cabin D2

The cabin overall was average. This was our first time sailing on RCCL with children. Our children (8 & 7 years old) stayed with us in a Deluxe Oceanview stateroom with Verandah. At night, with the couch made into a double bed, the cabin felt very small and rendered most of the space unusable. (You simply won't beat Disney in the family orientated stateroom category). Beyond this, the stateroom was in good repair, save for a toilet which would overflow at random moments, and a balcony door with made an awful noise when it was opened or closed.

Port Reviews

Costa Maya

The little shopping village in Costa Maya has come a long way. They have put in a tremendous amount of time, energy and money to make this a great little destination (Bravo!) However, beyond this village, there is NOTHING to do on Costa Maya outside of an excursion. Beyond this, the day we were in port, there were three huge ships docked as well. The tiny village was absolutely slammed with people (think Disney World, Magic Kingdom on New Year's Eve). Shoulder to shoulder, couldn't move, couldn't shop, couldn't do anything.
