I had high hopes, after cruising on the Holland America "Amsterdam" for a 2-week cruise to Alaska on June 19th thru July 3rd this year. THAT cruise was absolutely wonderful!!!

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that Holland America is very consistent. Previously, I was on the 33-Day cruise in March this year, on the ms Maasdam. And, while there were many issues (it is a VERY old ship), I was very impressed with how the captain handled the huge amounts of complaints. It really felt like he cared about what we complained about. He responded quickly and appropriately to everything. I was so impressed, despite the many issues (poor vent/AC system, horrific tendering, etc...) because while there may have been problems, they were addressed, the captain apologized, AND he took action to try to keep us all happy, for a very extended amount of time. It convinced me to cruise on Holland. And, I did - on the Amsterdam to Alaska for two-weeks. It was absolutely wonderful. But, this last cruise, just makes me shy away from cruising on Holland again. I didn't bother to complain while on this ship, after my initial letter to them, on the first day, to let them know how unhappy I was. It was clear to me, that Holland's ms Eurodam couldn't and wouldn't live up to the great Amsterdam experience.

First of all, windows were regularly blocked with closed curtains. Does the ship NOT understand that the view is the MOST important aspect of an Alaska cruise? I had mentioned it several times, to employees/staff, but they never did anything about it. I would get smart alick answers like "the weather is bad".

Cabin Review

Large Ocean-View Stateroom

Cabin E

LOVED the size of the room and the window and view was OUTSTANDING!!! Thank goodness I loved the room, because the ship felt very claustrophobic to me, especially since the windows were usually blocked and/or covered. There seems to be WAY too many shops where public seating and window viewing would be preferred.

Port Reviews

Juneau

I would prefer more native port stops and not so much of a shopping cruise, staffed with ship employees who don't even live in Alaska. It doesn't make the visit very authentic. It is just obviously a money maker for the ships, and we pay dearly to get there to shop.

I previously did a dog sled excursion, the 1st Holland cruise I did in June/July. It was VERY disappointing, as it was more like a meri-go-round the dog camp and not an adventure at all. The best part was the helicopter ride to and from the glacier, but definitely NOT worth $450 and I was convinced to not take another ship excursion after this disappointment.

Glacier Bay

No excursions necessary for this adventure, on the ship. I was a bit disappointed that the TV view of the front and back of the ship was not piped with the narration from the rangers. I had a beautiful view from my cabin, and it would have been nice to hear what was being said, as it was when I just previously cruised on the Norwegian Pearl just a week prior. While the view was outstanding, the experience provided by the rangers and/or staff was definitely lacking and not comparable to how nicely and professionally Norwegian Pearl operated.

Sitka

The may be one of the more boring ports of call. It is especially not fun on a rainy day. Nothing really to do here, except visit the museum and of course, shop until your heart's content. Passengers seem to think THIS was the BEST place for the sales, at the end of September!!!

Ketchikan

I wish that locals were employed here, to man the shops. I love the Dolly bothel museum and how you can see the salmon swimming up steam in the rivers all around you, while walking.

This place is best when experienced with locals, not a ship excursion. We saw eagles, bear, salmon, and had lots of good information told to us by a local bus driver.
