So many excellent port destinations

Sail Date: February 2017
Destination: Caribbean
Embarkation: Barbados
We chose this cruise for it's itinerary & dates but were a bit concerned about some of the negative reviews of Britannia but decided to give it a try. This was our 5th cruise but the 1st with P&O. We were not disappointed in the itinerary or in Britannia.

The flights & embarkation were very well organised & our coach driver from Barbados airport to the port provided us with lots of interesting information. It was great getting straight off the plane & onto the coach without having to go through the airport.

Britannia is extremely large & can be a little tricky to get around due to it's slightly odd layout but it is elegant & kept immaculately clean. Yes the lifts were often too busy but we were happy to use the stairs.

We had an inside cabin on deck 11 which was spacious & well equipped with a really big comfortable bed & was extremely quiet & we were well looked after by Kris our cabin steward.

There are a More number of restaurants to choose from. We were on freedom dining in the Peninsular restaurant for dinner. We opted for shared tables eating with a different group of people each evening which we enjoyed. We never had to wait for a table. I am vegetarian & was provided with a special menu but had to choose my meals a day in advance. The food was always varied & of good quality. We often ate breakfast & sometimes lunch or afternoon tea in the Horizon buffet restaurant. This was normally busy but we always found a table & there was a variety of food available. One night we paid a supplement to eat in Sindhu. The food was excellent & the whole experience really enjoyable.

The evening entertainment was a slight disappointment to us. In the two weeks the show team only performed on 4 evenings. The sound quality in the theatre was pretty bad. On the other hand the band Pulse were excellent.

We found that it was always easy to find sunbeds even on sea days as long as you didn't want to be next to one of the pools. The staff did take measures when they found sunbeds being reserved & not used. There are also plenty of chairs & sofas around to relax on.

We booked P&O trips in Aruba, Antigua & Dominica all of which we enjoyed. We made our own arrangements in the other ports. One of the best parts of this cruise was the number & variety of ports.

Overall this was an extremely enjoyable holiday which we would recommend. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Kayaking

This was our favourite P&O trip. We were driven across the island to an activity centre where we were taken on a boat ride through the mangroves. We landed at a kayak station where after some instructions we set off in double manned kayaks following our guide through the mangroves. At intervals he stopped to show us various sea creatures & provide us with information. We then went by boat to a beautiful stretch of water where we snorkelled over a reef. Following this we went to Bird Island where we climbed a short hill to experience the views. Back down on the gorgeous beach we swam & were then given rum punch & banana cake. The trip finished with a fast boat ride back to the base.

Island Tour

Driven by coach to Ayo Rock Formations for brief stop, then onto the coast where the Natural bridge used to be before it's collapse & then onto California Lighthouse. Coach driver provided us with lots of information throughout the trip. We were then dropped at a beach for an hour before returning to the port. The trip lasted about 4 hours in total. Enjoyable trip.

There is a nice walk from the port, along the sea front, past the shops & harbour to a beautiful beach. There are quiet areas & busier areas with sunbeds, bars & water sports. The locals were really friendly. My husband went scuba diving & I went snorkelling with turtles. Brilliant. Both organised through the dive centre at the Hilton Hotel.

Very pretty port area with shops & floating market. We walked to the sea aquarium (about 4 miles). Small aquarium but worth a visit. It's next to a lovely but busy beach with lots of amenities. Great snorkelling.

Snorkeling

We were driven a short distance to a volcanic bay. We walked up the hill to admire the views. Back down on the shore we were given snorkelling equipment & after a safety briefing taken on a guided snorkel trip. It was interesting but the group was too big. After a rum punch we were driven to Bubble beach. A local man has set up a small beach bar on a tiny beach & sectioned off an area of the sea to create a hot spring pool fed by the volcanic springs. The water was incredibly hot. After returning to the port we walked to the Botanical gardens where we climbed up to an amazing vantage point. Access to the gardens is free & you can buy refreshments & have access to free wifi.

We took a water taxi from the port to Grande Anse beach. Beautiful beach. My husband went scuba diving & I relaxed at a local hotel. Booked with Dive Grenada. Some areas of the beach were really quiet & idyllic.

We walked about a mile along a busy road to a lovely long sandy beach. Found a quiet area to ourselves but there were also areas with amenities. There are trees down to the waters edge which provide great shade. Later we walked around the shops & stopped at one of the port bars for rum punch. There is a very lively bar scene during the evening.

This was the busiest port of our cruise with 6 large ships. The port shopping area was extemely busy. We walked about a mile into the town. This was brimming with expensive shops aimed at the American market. Alongside the town is a long sandy crowded beach & masses of lively bars. We found this port too busy & too comercial.

Didn't really enjoy this port. Arrived on market day. Whole area was manic. Difficult to walk around as so busy. Discovered a couple of interesting churches but at times really didn't feel that comfortable.
