Sail Date: Oct 2016

We did the final Mediterranean sailing of the Vista before she made the Transatlantic trip to the USA. We stayed in an inside room on the 7th floor and signed up for anytime dining.

Embarkation, outside of the Greek Air Traffic Controllers going on strike the day we were slated to arrive, went okay. One thing odd did happen- it appeared as if someone stole my luggage tags and the wire cables holding my cruise tags. Luckily all our luggage made it to our room okay.

Once on board and since this was a brand new ship, I guess I was expecting something 'more' than we had found on previous ships so I may have been slightly disappointed only because of my own expectations. What we did find is that the room, although square-foot-wise it was quite ample, the lack of storage space especially closets, was rather annoying. One narrow hanging closet and one narrow closet with shelves and drawers built in was all we had. There was a set of three open shelves under the counter that housed the mini-fridge but most of them were so 'short' and deep that all I used them for was to hold the pool towels and some paperwork. And, with the lack of closets, the life jackets are now housed under the bed therefore making it tough to even stuff your empty suitcases under the bed.

Port Reviews

Rhodes

Nice old town and castle to walk through and around. Lots of shopping or beach time.

Malta (Valletta)

Did the Hop On Hop Off bus. There are three lines which cover much of the island. Unfortunately they each take a long time so we were not able to see as much as we would have liked. From was we did see, there are lots of beaches and lots of hotels along the coast with there being lots of farms in the interior.

Taormina (Messina)

We rented a cab with 2 other couples to go up to Etna and then visit Taormina. The Etna portion was an expensive disappointment. We paid to 'go to the top' which really isn't the top. Lots of walking at altitude with not that much to see. If you've been to Mt Lassen in CA you'll see a more interesting active volcano.

We ended up having very little time in Taormina. Its a nice but crowded hillside town and much more worth a visit than the side of Etna.

Naples

Went on our own to Herculaneum and then took the train on to Sorrento before hopping on a ferry to get back to the ship. If you are interested in history and seeing a small port town somewhat destroyed by the famous Vesuvius eruption, its a nice complement or substitute for Pompeii. Sorrento is a beautiful hillside city. Have a gelato and enjoy the views.
