We chose a month-long cruise that focused on the Norwegian fjords and the Baltic -- it was a combination itinerary that satisfied my desire to cruise the fjords and my husband's to visit the ports of the Baltic. It was the Viking Sea's second voyage -- and it was fantastic. The ship was beautiful; the crew were friendly and helpful; the shore sightseeing options were plentiful and the staff very helpful in making arrangements. Every stateroom had a balcony, and the ship had many quiet, lovely places to sit and read or gather with friends for a friendly game of cards or Scrabble. We loved the quiet, serene atmosphere. The food was excellent, with a choice of two specialty restaurants, a Scandinavian deli, a cafeteria and a casual pool deck grill in addition to the main restaurant. The menu changed depending on where we were with local food highlighted at every port. The entertainment was fine -- a classical trio, a pianist, a guitar player and a small band of singer/dancers handled most of the shows, but special artists were brought on as well. There were interesting lectures and good port talks to get you ready for your next adventure. The on-board spa was wonderful, and we both got good haircuts at the beauty salon. From beginning to end we felt like royalty -- and Viking provided the smoothest embarkation and debarkation experience we have every had on a cruise. We cannot prais them highly enough.

Cabin Review

We were in a Deluxe Veranda cabin on the starboard side, about mid-ship. The room was very well appointed with plenty of storage space, including in the bathroom. All staterooms had a veranda which was particularly nice sailing into and out of the fjords. There was a TV monitor that showed several American and British stations, as well as videos of the port talks and lectures (in case you missed them) and a good selection of movies (not that we ever had time to watch them).

Port Reviews

Harwich

Embarkation was very smooth.

Kirkwall

We took an excursion to the Ring of Brodgar -- very interesting.

Alesund

Beautiful restored town -- within easy walking distance of the ship. We took our own look around.

Tromso

The Botanical Gardens are not to be missed. They were truly spectacular.

Bergen

Beautiful port city -- we took a Hop On Hop Off bus in lieu of a walking tour since we have some mobility limitations.

Berlin

Instead of going to Berlin we took a tour into the Mecklenburg countryside, including a brief stop on the coast of the North Sea. It was interesting.
