This was a family cruise for me, my husband and all of my husbands side of the family. Most of us had cruised before on the Carnival Cruise Line. Our party consists of My husbands mother, step father, father, step mother all of which had never cruised before. Also my husband sister, niece,my nieces friend, sisters boyfriend, his daughter and a friend, and my husbands aunt, all which had cruised before on other cruise lines. We were hoping this family cruise would be the start of many family cruises for our family. But after this experience on The Sun, I will be surprised if the first time cruisers will ever want to give another cruise line a chance.

first let me start by tell you the itinerary for this ship is great. The ports of call are wonderful. Our first port was Costa Maya. We did not do a shore excursion. Instead I had pre-booked us a golfcart so we could travel the two miles up the road to the little town of Mauhaul. I pre- booked over the net with Costa-Maya Tours. The cost is $10.00 for pre-booking and $65.00 upon arrival in cash for a full days rental. Now one thing you must know you can rent for only $65.00 upon arrival but you run the risk of them being booked up, so I suggest you go ahead and pre-book for the extra $10.00. It is well worth it. After we picked up the golf cart we made our way to the small town of Mauhaul. It is a beautiful place to visit. There are plenty of little shops to buy souvenirs( at a lot better deal than in port) a nice beach where you can get a little table for no real cost only the price of a beer or soda. They will come right to you on the beach to serve you. There are a few restaurants to have lunch, still the will take your order right on the beach and deliver you food right to your beach side table. The service was great, everytime my husband wanted another beer all I had to do was raise my hand and the young man serving us would bring him a beer. It was wonderful. You could also get a massage right there on the beach (very reasonable rates). We did not shop to much in the Costa Maya port for us it was way to loud, crowded and the prices were to high. But if you are looking for the party scene that is where it was at.

Our second port of call was Guatemala. This was my favorite of all ports. Again I pre-booked over the net for our excursion (the excursions on the ship are double the price as booking yourself). We went with Happy Fish Travel. They are great. Met us right at the port. We boarded a small boat to set out for our day. We had Erik Barrientos as our tour guide. He was great answered all our questions, was very friendly and most helpful. It was a great day. We travel down river through the canyon to see waterfalls, the wildlife and stopped at a nice little place to purchase souvenirs. Then we traveled back to the small tour of Livingston for lunch at the Happy Fish Restaurant. The food was good. We had the steaks but I had also order the Happy Fish Platter which was fish and grilled shrimp. My favorite was the grilled shrimp. That is what I would recommend. My husband and I walked through the small town, did a little shopping. You can get great buys here but you must know a little spanish and have plenty of single dollar bills to make your purchases. This is a very poor country and they appreciate anything you spend here. After returning to the port we boarded the ship and the people of Guatemala all come out and put a very nice show to send the ship off. They are great. Also one thing I would like to mention also. Please remember that the guides that do the tours are not the owners of the boats for the excursions. They are paid a very small wage. It is greatly appreciated if you tip the guides. Our guide Erik was great and yes we tipped him. But I over heard other guest wondering why he would have to work to jobs after just doing the tour well it is because he is paid very little wages. So please remember to tip the guides.
