Overall our 8 night cruise to San Juan, St. Croix, St. Maarten and RCCL's private resort was a lot of fun. The weather was sunny and warm, and honestly, how can you complain with being in a tropical paradise? We most especially enjoyed the wide range of activities every day on the ship, including talented entertainers in the Place Theater and Studio who were great. I liked the Cruise Director, Leigh, who came across as a genuinely funny man with the huge job of keeping 4,000 guests entertained. His side-kick, Erkey was good too. The ship was clean and was well kept despite its age. I looked hard for the frayed carpet and blemishes in public areas and could find none mentioned in other reviews. The cabins were a bit roughed-up and did show their age with scuffs on the walls and a few areas with chipped paint. The cabins were clean and our steward attentive to our daily needs. There were only a few things on the Explorer which could have been done better. The lack of a Midnight Buffet was inexcusable. The cheap sandwiches and desserts served up at the pool one night were disgusting and not a Midnight Buffet. The food in the main dining room was fairly bland and portions smaller than expected. Our waiter was more than willing to bring us more food if we asked. There was one black mark were our original table assignment was in a back dining area reserved to handle the overflow on the busiest cruises. The Head Waiter, Albert made everything right by getting us a wonderful table in the main dining room after we complained. He could have easily blown us off saying the ship was full and nothing was available. The ship was crowded and this was most evident in finding chairs top-side on decks 11 and 12, which were highly in demand. As for nightlife, Dizzy's on Deck 14 had great live music almost every night. I found quiet spots on deck at night in the back of the ship on Deck 11 that was especially nice when we were eastbound into the strong wind. Deck 4 is really cool under the lifeboats and is a much better place to walk than deck 12. Lastly, get out to the bow of the ship via Deck 4 one night when wind conditions are favorable. There isn't anything that compares to the total darkness lit only by the moon and stars.
