We travelled on the Lord of the Glens from Oban to Inverness over a 5 night period in October. The weather, surprisingly, was fantastic bar one or two light showers. We travelled from Oban to Mull, then up through the Caledonian canal to Inverness.
This trip is unusual. Firstly, you get to see places you wouldn't normally unless you want to take long car trips. Seeing the Highland scenery from the centre of a Loch is also a bonus and there is a lot of wonderful scenery to see. As it was October we saw some fantastic autumn colours and there was plenty to experience along the way.
Parts of the canal are stunning and you get the opportunity to stop off to visit Glenfinnan and travel across the viaduct, Tobermory and Duart Castle on Mull and Fort Augustus.
Cabin Review
Cabin 304 on the Lord of the Glens is on the third deck directly under the lounge area which is on the top deck. It is convenient for the restaurant which is on the same deck. It has twin beds, a good window on one side and is pleasantly furnished. Plenty of storage space given it is not very large. It was very quiet. Beds were comfortable but there is a large heavy canopy covering the bed which can be cumbersome, under that is a blanket and sheet. However, the cabins were always warm at night so this wasn't a problem. We didn't find it necessarily warm during the day sometimes but this could be our inability to suss out the heating system.
The bathroom is tiny, think caravan size, so if you are disabled or of generous build you may find this tiresome and difficult to use. Bathroom has small shower unit and washbasin.
