While every traveler hopes for sunny skies and steady seas, this year's VOV journey had it's share of poor weather challenges. Four missed ports, and plenty of time to use your umbrella did seem to place a damper on some travelers spirits. Many of the travelers were veteran cruisers and several had previously gone on a similar voyage. As a first time Voyage of the Vikings cruiser I offer the following observations.
PROS:
I can't say enough about the captain. He kept the travelers informed of weather conditions and schedule changes. I felt safety was his primary concern and I much appreciated that policy. He was also friendly and participated in shore visits with the cruisers.
Cabin Review
Standard Spa Interior Stateroom
Cabin #112 on Veranda deck on the Maasdam, is a cramped and close space by any cabin standard. I'm only 5'3' and of average size, but found this a very awkward space in which to spend 35 days. Cabin #112 is certainly not adequate for a large or mobility impaired solo traveler. This cabin does not have any seating other than a single desk chair. The space indicated for the chair is also the only space that can be used to access the bathroom or the clothes cupboard. The closet was one half the size of the space in a regular interior cabin and the desk drawers were less than one third the size. The sharp corners of the bed frame and the lack of space on either side of the bed resulted in bruises and gashes on my shins.
The room should be modified into a twin bed space, which would allow a single traveler to be comfortable during a sea journey, and provide space for a loveseat. In addition, the desk does not have a desktop plug, requiring the traveler to crawl under the desk to plug or unplug any device. The floor length mirror cannot be used unless you can climb behind the desk. THe most awkward cabin I have ever seen.
