As fairly experienced cruisers, this cruise did not meet our expectations and having read some of the previous reviews for this ship, I fully undertsnad where they are coming from.
The service in the Open Seating restaurant was diabolical from the 20 minute wait before being allowed into the restaurant to the delays in being served. Watch the wine server also who will try to sell you additional ...
We are experienced cruisers with this being my 22nd cruise, but first with HAL. This was a 7 day Alaska cruise, with ports of call in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchican and Glacier Bay. We are "go with the flow" kinda folks, so we would have had a good time no matter what.
We had heard a lot of nice things about Holland America, and for the most part, they were accurate. But I'm thinking that the ...
Having read previous reviews of MS Volendam I think we must have been on a different ship. Our cruise was faultless, staff helpful, cabin clean, food good, shows excellent & ship not too crowded. We found the whole experience much better than our last cruise which was with P&O. ...
This was our first cruise, so we have not a lot to compare with. Since we used a lot the CC reviews during our research for our cruise, I will anyhow summarise our experience in the Volendam.
We have been postponing forever our first cruise because genuinely we were afraid of hating the entire thing: we are well educated and well traveled people, that prefer either an hiking trip in a park or a ...
This was our 3rd cruise with HAL. The first 2 were on Amsterdam, which immediatly set a high standard, which Volendam couldn't quite attain. More on that later.
We had booked this itinerary a couple of years ago, but unfortunately it was chartered away from under us.We ended up doing a 37 day Grand Voyage sector on Amsterdam from Fort Lauderdale to Sydney, which was absolutely magnificent.
We ...
This was our first and probably last trip with Holland America. We had previously done a 19 night trip with Cunard which we thoroughly enjoyed. The cruise ticked all the boxes when we booked. It was travelling from Hong Kong to Japan and was stopping at Shanghai, Beijing, Nagasaki and Osaka. The cruise was really a way of getting from Hong Kong to Osaka and the visited ports.
I am just glad it ...
My first cruise on Holland America and my LAST Have done at least a dozen cruises with all companies and this was without a doubt the very worst. The food was dreadful, the photos on HALs website are certainly not from Volendam. Portion sizes are very small and most people ate in the Lido buffet - tell you anything? Cabin was spacious and very nice but one small cake of soap for 2 wks? ( had to ...
We boarded the Volendam in Hong Kong. Embarkation was a breeze and we were happy to hear that our cabins were ready even before noon.
Our cabin had lots of storage space. The newly installed lanai cabins had great new showers and we enjoyed the amenities like lotions and soaps. It was nice to have the shelves on the bathroom wall and the shelf under the sink. We did find that the ...
Our cruise got off to a bad start, the drink packages we had prepaid for did not appear on our cards so the drinks were charged to our room, the other family we were travelling with the same thing happened. Easy fix you should think but for the next two weeks our wives complained daily to try and get our account fixed. They complained to the front office the head of the beverages (Ferdinand) all ...
Embarkation in Singapore was reasonably straight forward (in spite of being taken to the wrong cruise centre by the taxi driver). The only thing that could have been improved was the forms we had to fill out while standing in a mass of other guests.
Our cabin was fine apart from the fact we could barely see out of the window, a window clean now and again would not hurt HAL!
Now for the bad ...
