My background:
47, Family of 4, cruised on NCL, RCL, and MSC
embarkation and disembarkation
This was the smoothest part of the trip. Literally, it was the easiest I have ever seen on any cruise line. Everything is very orderly!
service
good, nothing to write home about, very typical except in the dinning room where none of the staff seemed to know where tables were located and ...
We had an opportunity to sail so inexpensively, I simply couldn't say no. Honestly, we had two inside cabins for two weeks at a total cost of $256, plus taxes and gratuities. On top of that, we received credits totaling over $400. None of that is a misprint.
So it's hard to be hard on HAL. I'm not "that guy" - I almost never, ever write negative reviews. But ...
I'll start with the positive. ...
I just got off the Nieuw Statentdam (aka Hospice of the seas). I've been on dozens of cruises, and this was by far the worst.
The ship had far fewer common areas than any other ship I've been on. It's not an old ship, so why was it designed so poorly? I don't need water slides and go-carts, but at least a few places to sit. They shoved in as many cabins as they could with little thought to ...
This cruise was a disaster from start to finish…but the worst part of it was the food and the rude waitstaff/bartenders….I was genuinely shocked at how horrible the food was- at least 75% of what we got was inedible…baked goods were dry and tasteless and the items that should’ve been hot were consistently COLD ….i even saw flies on the baked goods…rotten fruit etc…I actually ended up losing ...
We have 145 nights sailing on HAL but this cruise line has changed a lot and this will be our last cruise on them. First the PROS: the food is still very good; staff works hard to take care of the passengers; balcony cabins were adequate; embarking and disembarking went smoothly; our wine package was good; room service was very good THE CONS: the staff overall seems understaffed & overworked; ...
I want to open this negative review with a disclaimer that I am of a minority that this cruise line caters to. We went on this cruise with 2 adults and 3 children (4, 8, 10). This is not the "target audience," so our experience will inevitably vary wildly from, say, a 50+ couple or a solo traveler. I am writing this for the people like us whose intention is a family vacation.
With the above ...
1. Cabin had some nasty stuff on the walls - looked like semen - grossed me out when I accidentally touched it. Had the cabin staff clean it out and they had to come back a second to get spots they missed. The hotel director was advised but made no attempt to apologize. Sent a supervisor on the last day of our cruise to check on something that occurred on the first day of the cruise

new ship. noisiest doors i've ever experienced. can't rate the rest of the cruise. feel like i'm in the gulf war war with daisy cutters dropping by the minute. INSTALL DOORS THAT CLOSE WITHOUT SHOCKING HALF THE BOAT!!!! can't even opine on the rest of the cruise it's probable fine. i've developed a horrible fear of returning to room. i own the best earplugs and the vibrations penetrate them. ...
Took my wife on this ship on the January 13th sailing for her birthday for 18 days. In fairness let me be nice and review the only things that were acceptable. The cabin upgrade was nice. Food was just above average. The service from all the crew was excellent.
Out all of my 29 cruises this was the worst. If this was my first cruise I truly would have never sailed again. The management of this ...
