Known as "Limestone City," Kingston, Ontario is located where the St. Lawrence and Cataraqui Rivers meet. It's a rather quaint city that claims the title of Ontario's oldest. Kingston boasts a number of historic sites and architectural gems, like the 19th-century Fort Henry, which was built to both protect the city and to host military demonstrations, and Kingston Penitentiary, which dates back to 1835 and is open for tours. The imposing Kingston City Hall is another must-see -- it takes up an entire city block and is a national heritage site that still houses many government offices.
Active cruisers and those who prefer to stay close to the water might consider an excursion to the beautiful Thousand Islands -- a chain of islands that borders New York state and Ontario. Here, visitors can see lighthouses and maritime museums or spend the day hiking, biking, fishing or enjoying any number of watersports.
