Our cabin steward was excellent, but that was about all; he was named Lamphong and he was great. Otherwise, the cruise was fairly mediocre, stopping in several Caribbean ports including their manufactured island in the Bahamas. We had a veranda room looking out at the very aft of the ship, which cost more than the regular veranda rooms. We were surprised to find a dinky veranda, no larger that the others on either side of the ship. The main dining room featured formica tables without table cloths; I thought they perhaps could add to this truck stop theme by placing squeeze bottles of ketchup and mustard, and perhaps hot sauce, in a little stainless steel holder. Much better was the Havana Bar on the Lido deck, which featured excellent omelettes each morning. Also, the hamburger stand by the very small pool was great. No bathrobes, no binoculars, nothing extra. This ship, unlike other Carnivals, did have a library with more than a dozen books, and it did have ample launderettes. The prime rib was paper-thin and tough, but the steak and eggs for breakfast in the main dining room had a small fillet mignon. Overall, this ship and cruise did not compare to a similar one we took a few months ago on Holland America. The ship itself is ship-shape, and we give them high marks for the embarkation and disembarkation process as well as luggage delivery. Carnival knows how to move people. The entertainment was fine. I'll confess that we'd already taken shore excursions to the ports we stopped at, so we benefited from low population around the pool on port days. It was harum-scarum at the pool on sea days. This was a adult cruise, so I can't comment on kid's activities, but Carnival has a great reputation for that sort of thing. Overall the best thing I can say is that our cabin service was superior. We cruised on this ship when it was the Destiny and had a great experience. This was the total opposite. Let me first say that our cruise director Mikey was AMAZING. I’d sail with him as CD again any day, he went above and beyond. Pros: JiJi Restaurant was wonderful! Make sure to try the pork belly, pot stickers, and the wide noodles. This is family style dining so everyone gets to try each dish. Service was amazing! Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse is a must! Our top choices were the smoked oysters, essence of tomato shots from the chef, and of course the ribeye. Great service & great food. Cons: This is the first cruise I’ve ever been on that most of the staff were rude or just plain ignored passengers. We normally tip very well, but walked off this ship without tipping above those already billed. The lido buffet was AWFUL! The only thing we ate in there was breakfast 3 times and two salads for lunch. Same bland, greasy, over cooked food every day. Not sure what was going on with the elevators but they were slow and most of the time blew by your floor. Waited more than five minutes several times. Maybe the elevator problem had something to do with children allowed to play in the elevators. An example, we entered an elevator with a approx 12 year old boy sitting in the floor eating an ice cream cone. The boy was laughing at the fact he had pushed all the buttons and was just riding up and down. His buddy was doing the same in the adjacent elevator. Want a deck chair? Better get up at 5 am to reserve one. Staff were allowing passengers to hold chairs by placing their belongings there for hours at a time. Want peace on the Serenity deck? Better find a better place, like front row center at a heavy metal concert. No where to sit, loud, kids running around. I think Carnival really missed the mark when the started doing away with the aft adults only pool areas. Did I say the staff? We had Your Time Dining, one side of the dining room was pleasant and the other actually gave me a dirty look. The bright spot was Nestor and his team including Jennifer who never stopped smiling. I’d give the other wait staff’s name that gave me a dirty look but he never gave us his name & didn’t spend enough time at our table to notice his name tag. We did enjoy our room steward but the cabin aft deck 7 had an odd amount of dust everywhere. Also we had a mildew smell in our cabin that seemed to be coming from the drain. Read Less

We sailed on the Sunshine in June 2018 and we enjoyed the ship so much, that when we returned home we booked a New Year's Eve cruise on her. Even chose the same cabin. I don't want to be redundant, so I won't repeat everything from my review of our June cruise, but I do want to let everyone who hasn't sailed on the Sunshine know that the negative reviews I have read are way off the mark. The ship is clean and the crew is wonderful. Always cheerful and helpful. This cruise was just my wife and me, no kids, and we had an absolute blast. We have our own way of cruising, so maybe our opinion doesn't apply to everyone. First, we rarely visit the main dining room...ever. It just takes too long for us, no matter the food or service. We did enjoy the steak house very much. We went on the first night for the free bottle of wine. We highly recommend JiJi's Asian Kitchen. Outstanding food. Also Bonsai Sushi. Guy's burgers of course, and the pizza was great. The lines moved along, no long wait. Buffet was very good when we tried it. Not everything is perfect, never is, but when I read reviews that say "it's always cold" or "it's inedible" I just have to laugh. Simply isn't true. The Alchemy bar is our favorite bar, great bartenders. The Havana Bar too. Helpful hint: You can order great coffee drinks here and avoid the lines at Java Blue. New Year's Eve at sea was so cool, definite bucket list. Kissing my baby at midnight while the ship blows its horn was unforgetable. Then dancing on the Lido deck with 3000 of my best friends. Awesome experience! Missing Amber Cove on January 1st due to high winds was a bit of a let down, but I never heard anyone complain, or saw any fighting over deck chairs (we were poolside when the announcement was made about Amber Cove). It is what it is, don't let it ruin your day. We decided to take a nap (a little hungover). We didn't go on this cruise for the ports anyway. Grand Turk is always fun. Walked the beach to Jack's Shack for a few drinks and a swim. Then back up to the Whales Tale for one more cocktail. (maybe two) Finally, a shout out to Mikey, one of the best CDs on any ship, anywhere. Always a pleasure. Also to Agus, our room steward, and Parviz at the Alchemy Bar. Thanks guys, you all helped make our vacation fun and relaxing. And to all the nitpicky, negative Nells out there....um, never mind, why bother. Read Less

I compare this cruise to past adventures on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC which we love. I blocked out any negative reviews regarding Carnival and ended up loving this cruise. Here is the real lowdown on the Carnival Sunshine. Let’s start with the things I loved. CABIN-The location of our spa room 11030 was amazing. It was steps from the waterfall and the all adults serenity deck. The size of the room was perfect and had down to the water views from the balcony .Access to the spa relaxation room and steam rooms made this room category a great choice. Make sure that you book high floors on this ship. I will explain later. Our very friendly room steward, Dhimas stocked our room with all of the beverages and items we ordered prior to the trip. He also kept the ice flowing. Loved him. He kept that room clean and ready for us. We had no trouble getting around the ship once we found out that you can walk the entire length of the ship on deck 5. That allowed us to always find elevators to our cabin on the 11th floor. FOOD-While the buffet is small and nothing to write home about when compared to other ships we’ve sailed, Carnival offers additional restaurants for breakfast and lunch like Guy’s Fieri’s Burgers and the taco/burrito Blue Iguana Cantina spots as well as the Asian/Italian , MDR and pizza area of the buffet. We never made it to Bonsai sushi which we know would have been great. The food was simply awesome! The specialty JiJi’s Asian and the Cucina Del Capitano were terrific. I am still dreaming about lamb chops and short ribs and a NY strip that was so tender. I am also still craving that rose crème brulet and the melting chocolate cake with the ice cream. The waiters and waitresses dance and sing at dinner every night. That is wayyyy beyond the call of duty but neat to see. If you sail this ship please note all options for breakfast on your hub app. Walk through the very limited main buffet to JiJi’s Asian and the Cucina Del Capitano Italian in the AM to get to wonderful omelette stations. They also open for free lunch also. Most don’t know that they are there for breakfast and lunch. Also try the breakfast burritos and tacos at Blue Iguana Cantina on the deck and there is also a small breakfast served on deck five near the coffee shop. And those Guy Fieri burgers and fries are amazing. We never tried the steakhouse but loved the steak in the main dining room at no extra charge. FRIENDLY PEOPLE-. We made a ton of friends on this cruise. The passengers were comfortable, having fun and willing to share with you unlike other cruises. Mikey the Cruise Director is worth mentioning. I have never met the Director on any ship except this one. He made sure that he reached out , shook our hands and checked on us. We don’t where he gets soooo much energy but we hope they are paying him well! He kept the fun going on this ship. PORTS-We visited Grand Turk, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten and St. Kitts. Getting on and off the ship was fast and problem free. No tenders! Yeah! We loved our ports. St. Kitts requires an excursion. It can be a sketchy port beyond the shops. That turned into a relaxing day back on the ship. All the others were enjoyable with no booked excursions. Grand Turk and St. Maarten have great beaches right off of the ship. We found a beach in Puerto Rico that we walked to near the Fort. So now for the things that certainly didn’t kill our trip but were in our opinion, areas for improvement. We also heard other passengers complain about these particular areas which make them worth mentioning. POOR CONNECTIVITY-Internet is horrible and nonexistent on this ship. I repeat nonexistent! No one is in the fifth floor internet café because there really isn’t available internet with a plan or not .I paid for a plan as well as my husband. It never worked on my Apple 8. He seemed to have text capabilities and facetime on his Apple 7 plus. I asked for a full refund for my portion and received one. We had to search for internet in the ports to post pics etc. You really have to disconnect from the world on this ship. The Carnival HUB app was helpful and provided activity information in a flash with or without the internet plan. That app seemed to be the only thing that worked on my phone. Royal Caribbean has the best internet hands down. Business travelers would be in trouble on this ship. BAD SMELLS AT TIMES-We smelled sewage with deodorizer smells on the 5th floor on down to 3rd which is unfortunate because the dining room is on those floors. We weren’t sure if they were from bathrooms or some other area. I used the ladies bathroom near the MDR and didn’t smell it in there so the source was something else. They must resolve that issue. That’s not appetizing when you are headed for dinner on the same floor and I couldn’t stay in a room with that. Some guests had that issue. Booking a high floor gets you away from this issue. Some also complained about old urine smells near the toilet in cabin bathrooms. We experienced that too. I believe that this is due to the age of this ship. I usually Lysol clean the bathroom anyway when I arrive. Yes, the casino was smokey but aren’t they all? I wish they could vent it somehow or ban smoking there. I still managed to play slots and enjoy that area. PIXELS PHOTO GALLERY- The picture Pixels gallery was confusing. We never found some pics. They throw up pics in no real order and you must search for your faces through hundreds of photos. Who has hours to do that? Norwegian has solved that issue by computerizing the photos and grouping them by room number. They take your picture and attach it to your room number. You can see them all on a screen with no major hunt. We bought no pictures on this ship. It was too frustrating to find them all. ENTERTAINMENT-Entertainment was so-so! Djs on the Lido deck were good. I cracked up at the sailaway party. They had it but we were delayed in sailing away so it kinda fell flat this time. I know Carnival is known for its sailaway parties but the delay wasn’t their fault. I enjoyed the 70s Dance show and the Killer Beaz comedian. Other comedians were weak. We aren’t into audience participation shows and they were really into that. Motown show was messed up with the performers sitting on stools singing with bottles of water. They said a performer was ill and missing. The crew was talented but that was a weaker show. Other cruises have big themed costumed stage shows. The magician was weak too yet was interested in hawking his instructional dvds at the end of the show. Lounge bands were average. The shows kept us busy I suppose. Movies on the deck were more enjoyable or reading on my balcony. DÉCOR- This ship was built in 1996 and was refurbished in 2013. A lot of the neat restaurants were added at that time. The ship décor seemed 80ish to me and reminded me of an old Atlantic City or Vegas Casino .It is an older ship. They have done their best to keep her going. I prefer newer ships but the décor didn’t kill my cruise. It was ok. There was some rocking of the ship during our return due to rough surf. It was nothing serious and there were no signs of mechanical issues that some were still talking about from the listing incident some weeks ago. OVERALL IMPRESSION-The positives outweighed the negatives on this ship. We truly enjoyed our cruise , the spa amenities of the spa room category and the many ports. The food alone and great service would entice us to rebook on one of their newer ships. Carnival will definitely see us again. Read Less

Wanting to go to the southern Caribbean we choose this ship, big mistake, the food in the buffet was the same every day, looked very brown and greasy. Looking for peace and quite we retreated to the so called Serenity adults only retreat !,only to find that people were up at 7 am with there towels to reserve sun loungers !, there is a notice not to do this but still people reserved and some did not use them until well after 11am. There were also individuals with ghetto blasters and music systems blasting out noise most times we visited. I have problems to understand why this area is called Serenity when even music is belted out over the ships own speaker system. We cruised on Norwegian Epic last year and the serenity area there was truly quite. Abandoning the buffet we ate dinner in the restaurant on dekk 3, wonderful food and really exceptional friendly and attentive staff. The minus was the stench of sewage every day from the lift shafts leading to the lower decks, really overpowering and nauseating. Disembarkation was very inefficient it took over 2 hours after the 1st guests disembarked for us to get off the ship. Not recommended for anyone wanting peace and quiet. Read Less

Great get away just before the busy holiday season. MIkey the Cruise Director is fantastic. Keeps the crowds involved and entertained. Wonderful staff from top of the ship to bottom.Onboard entertainment was great so loved they get the audience interacting with the team. Bingo is getting more expensive with lower prizes. The food coming out at MDR could be warmer. Sometimes i got cool food so sent it back. Perhaps the Bartenders in Red frog pub deck 5 could know a little better english. I ordered a Rum Jumper when i signed the slip i saw i got a painkiller. We didnt order room service as we are pretty low key folks, but our friends did daily coffee and hot water came hot. Great selection of sweet rolls. As we have been to all the ports before we did not do any shore excurisions just got off and walked around the port area and enjoyed a few cold ones while the wifes shopped. Read Less

Mikey was best cruise director on 7 cruises we have taken. He was very involved in everything. Always made passengers aware of all the activities, and so much energy. Crew was great; always greeted where ever we went, asked if we needed anything.. Room steward greeted us upon arrival, gave his business card, and we saw him daily, he was very good. Food was great, plenty of options. Would have been better if burrito place and Guy's was open longer. Italian and Asian restaurants were delicious and worth $15 per person charge. Only negatives; size of lounges for comedy and shows couldn't get a seat to adult shows, and getting to main dining room was difficult; from AFT having to go across deck 5 thru casino and down to deck 4. Embarkation and Debarkation were smooth. Would recommend not scheduling popular events during late dining, we had to choose; going to our late dining time or attending event. Read Less

Did a Back 2 Back (B2B) with the first trip on deck 1 inside aft. Embarkation was extremely quick. Ship layout is a little weird, will get to that. Staff was excellent (like usual). Dining room was the quickest I've ever had. We had the first service and were out many days prior to 7 pm. Probably has a lot to do with the Main Dining Room (MDR) having so many two seat tables. That and the staff was just quick. The Limelight lounge (were comedians were) was the weirdest part of the ship. First it was tiny, I mean real tiny. That and a lot of the seats you can't even see the stage, you have to watch the TV screens. I loved the comedians (some of the best I've seen in a while), but to get in you needed to wait in line long before the show to even get in. Another thing, there are two doors on the side of the stage that have doors to a hallway and stairs. People walk through while shows are going on. The Liquid lounge (main theater) is small, but makes for some great viewing. If you want to sit close or for that matter on the main floor, go early or forget it, not many seats. The aft part of the ship is a little deck 9 (Lido) is a little weird. The Havana restaurant and a couple others are back there. They were ok, but just so much different than any other ship I've been on. Second part of B2B we moved to deck 12 a spa balcony. Loved the room for size (much bigger that our other one) and the ability for fresh air. Serenity decks are forward on this ship an multiple decks. Just above our room was lounge chairs and people would be our there early dragging chairs. If you are a light sleeper be prepared. Slept like a baby in the inside room, best sleep in months. Not so with the deck 12 experience. Theremal spa. This was our first experience. I'm hooked. We added the spa package to the inside room and it came with the second room. I have eigth move cruises booked and I've added the spa to each except one (one was way too expensive). The thermal chairs were out of this world to relax in and we used them sometimes multiple times a day. Only negative is some of the chairs didn't get very hot, so you had to check. Also, one of the steam rooms was intermitten on temperature. After a couple days I complained and they finally fixed it. That only lasted a day or so, if was hit or miss after that. Yes I'm still hooked, I hear some other ships thermal spas offer more (can't wait). Cruise Director was Mikey. I've had others that were favorites, I think he just took their place. He is so friendly and outgoing. I've seen him multiple times and he with stop you to shake your hand and see if you need anything. Chair hogs were in heaven. The Serenity deck overlooks the Lido and there are a few clamshel chairs. People were getting them early in the morning and putting hats, books, towels, ect.... and keeping them all day and night. I actually seen a guy getting up to leave and he told his friends in the next chair that they were going to dinner and would be back (classic chair hog). Dissembarkation was the fastest I can remember. A little trick, get a porter. They were so worth the tip. Cuised a couple months ago in Jacksonville (small terminal) and didn't use a Porter and it was crazy. As always this cruise was great. Staff was excellent, as most are. Ship layout is a little different, but not to bad. We will be back for a 13 day cruise in two months, so that said, I'd do it again. Read Less

Although The serenity deck with the waterfall pool was a nice feature to the cruise ship. But I Could tell it was an older ship. As to the Entertainment I've seen better but overall it was good. I'm not into the casino, or the comedy clubs scene so I can't comment on them. I've sailed with carnival and other cruise lines and overall it was a nice boat, very nice cabin attendent Dan , wait staff was good and the cruise director was funny . I wasn't looking to be wowed because of other reviews I read about this ship. I was just looking to have a fun, safe trip since the other cruises the week right before mine had some mechanical problems so I was just happy to cruise with no problems, and enjoy my vacation Read Less

I have cruised over 20x including carnival, royal and ncl. My new bride has never cruised and I wanted to try a cruise with her to see if she would like it and be ok with sailing with the idea we would book a Mediterranean cruise if she did enjoy cruising. I assured her these new large ships were safe and enjoyable, I explained the food was good etc.... Forward to the Sunshine, the most horrific cruise experience I have had in over 25 years of cruising. The food was sub par in the main dining room so I decided to try the steakhouse, I spent $100 for dinner and wine only to be served supermarket quality steak. The ship leaned and caused a news worthy panic, I understand electro-mechanical issues happen but the handling of the situation was deplorable. We were sitting in the piano bar drinking wine and trying our best to have a good time, the ship leaned, glassses and bottles fell from tables, people were screaming and we were not sure what was happening. My wife looked to me for guidance and I remained calm, I looked to the 2 crew members in the bar for guidance and 1 jumped up, grabbed his iPad and ran out, the other started to cry. At this point I became nervous and decided we should leave the area, my wife noticed all the panic and she started to panic. Another passenger told everyone to lean on the hallway wall, again no direction from the crew. When the ship leveled out we did not discover until the next day the cause of the incident, a circuit breaker for the stabilizer had tripped, it happens, crew members running and crying should never happen. I’m trying my best to convince my wife that cruising is not like this, the next morning we wake early and head to the serenity deck, blue sky, cup of coffee warm sun, finally relaxation.... at 8am the speaker behind our loungers starts blaring the ships events every 20 to 25 minutes, serenity?? More like insanity! The next day the cruise line applied a $ 50 pp credit to our sail account, the bottle of wine I lost in the wine bar was more than that combined with the realization my wife may never cruise again, a passion of mine that I want to enjoy with her makes me blame carnival for the worst cruise ever. When the ship reached the first stop some passengers needed medical care while others refused to reboard and flew home. I later found out they received a full refund and paid airfare with a $250 cruise credit, when I called the cruise line to demand a refund they explained that I did not fly home. I was never offered the option and a follow up call from a supervisor did not offer any compensation. I emailed the carnival media rep and the ceo, no one is responding, all I can do now is let everyone know how they treat their customers. Ironically this cruise put me at VIFP gold status, LOL,, don’t worry I will be taking my business elsewhere. The cruise line downplayed the incident but I’m sure they were not there to witness customers in wheelchairs or walking around with life jackets at dinner. My wife has had open heart surgery, we don’t need this aggravation. If you want details on the Sunshine please leave me a message but I have to recommend Royal or NCL! Read Less
