Everyone has a little superhero in them. Tap into your inner power (not to mention your inner child) through Marvel Day at Sea, a themed day of comic-oriented fun that takes place on select Disney Magic cruises.
What It Is
Disney bought Marvel Entertainment -- the part of Marvel that fans see onscreen through Spiderman, Thor and the Avengers movies -- back in 2009 and have been incorporating the beloved superheroes into their franchises ever since. Female superhero Captain Marvel joined the team in 2019.
The Marvel Day at Sea is a daylong celebration of the characters, with activities that run from 8 a.m. until midnight. Sample activities include meet and greets (of course), costume contests, super fan trivia game shows, a lecture from a Marvel executive and constant showings of Avengers movies in the ship's onboard theater.
Three shows also take place during Marvel Day at Sea. The earliest one, a magic show featuring Dr. Strange, is oriented toward younger children. Around dusk, there's a Hero show that stars Mickey and the gang, all wearing special Marvel-themed apparel. And finally, the Heroes Unite show in the evening is an extravaganza, with all of the heroes in one place, as well as a few villains. Fight scenes ensue, followed by triumphant fireworks (yes, good always triumphs over evil).

What we like best about Marvel Day at Sea is that there are so many activities, with things for kids of all ages (and a few adults, too; the last event turns the Fathoms nightclub into a Ravagers hangout from "Guardians of the Galaxy"). We also like the complete takeover of the ship -- you'll hear moody action movie theme music throughout the atrium and even the dinner menu has a few Marvel-themed items. And finally, we appreciate that there are quiet activities for the comic-loving introverts to chill out and simply read vintage issues or draw. Truly something for everyone.
One of the best things about Marvel Day at Sea is that the all of the activities, from 8 a.m. to midnight, are free. For some special characters, such as Groot (from "Guardians of the Galaxy"), you'll have to sign up in advance but it's still gratis and there are plenty of characters available during the day for photos if you didn't plan ahead.
While the meet and greets are free, the professional photos that you might buy aren't (they will take cellphone photos for you, but the lighting isn't as good). And with shops full of Marvel costumes, T-shirts and other paraphernalia, you might find yourself spending more than you thought you did. Our advice: Plan ahead, and bring your costume with you.
Marvel Day at Sea is only available on select sailings of Disney Magic. Departure dates include January 8, 17, 22, 31; February 5, 14, 19, 28; and March 5, 2022.
